Six Penmen Honored with Northeast-10 Winter Academic All-Conference Accolades

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Six Southern New Hampshire University student-athletes were selected to their sport's Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Team on Wednesday.

Senior Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) was one of 11 women's basketball honorees. A justice studies major with a 3.53 grade-point average, Dean started all 29 contests, averaging 12.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.2 assists per game, while shooting 42 percent from the field and 79 percent from the line. Dean led the team in scoring and rebounding, while ranking 12th in the league in field goals made (142), 13th in total points (369), 16th in total rebounds (178) and 18th in 3-pointers made (47). ... poured in a career-high 29 points (11-22 FG, 7-12 3-FG) in an 84-83 loss to Saint Anselm on Nov. 26.

Sophomore Joe Fiorino (Willow Grove, Pa.) and junior Kyle Galloway (Sugar Hill, Ga.) were two of 12 members of the men's ice hockey squad. Fiorino, a business administration major with a 3.93 GPA, was named a Joe Concannon Award semifinalist (New England's Best American-born Division II-III hockey player), as well as an NE10 All-Conference Second Team selection. Fiorino played in all 25 games, registering 18 points on six goals and 12 assists. He ranked second on the team in points and led the club in assists - a category in which he placed 20th in the league.

Galloway skated in 24 of 25 games, scoring seven goals and dishing six assists for 13 points. The accounting and finance major with a 3.87 GPA placed fifth on the team in scoring. 

Graduate student Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.), sophomore Ashley Corcoran (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.) solidified a league-high three of the 15 spots on the women's track & field team. Elder, who is pursuing her Master's degree in criminal justice and owns a perfect 4.0 GPA, earns the award for the fourth time, including the third straight indoor season. Elder competed in seven events and recorded five wins in the shot put, including at the NE10 Championships (13.96m). Elder, who was chosen for the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region Team in both the shot put and weight throw for this indoor season, also won the weight throw at the NE10 Championships (15.25m), in addition to qualifying for the NCAA National Championships in the shot put for the second consecutive season. Elder's best throw of the season was 15.07m at Southern Maine on Dec. 14, the sixth best throw in the nation. She was the league's Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 11.

Corcoran, who earned the honor in the fall after becoming the women's cross country program's first All-American, receives the award for the first time as a track & field athlete. The business administration major with a 3.72 GPA, competed in seven events during the indoor season. She was a member of the 4x800 team that finished first at the NE10 Championships (9:30.91), in addition to placing in the mile (5:01.43). Corcoran set a program record in the 3,000m (9:45.05) at the BU Last Chance Qualifier on Feb. 28 and also set a program record in the 5,000m (17:17.01) at the Emmanuel College Opener on Dec. 7. Corcoran was tabbed USTFCCCA All-Region in the Distance Medley Relay, mile, 3000 meters and 5000 meters, and was also the NE10 Track Athlete of the Week on two occasions (Dec. 10, Feb. 4).

Murphy, a sport management major with a 3.92 GPA, collects the honor for the third time in her career. Murphy participated in seven events during the indoor season, earning wins in the 55-meter hurdles (8.86) and triple jump (10.45m), as well as runner-up finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (9.55) 4x400-meter relay (4:15.82). She finished third at the NE10 Championships in the pentathlon - an event she was crowned All-Region in by the USTFCCCA All-Region.

To be eligible for selection to NE10 Academic All-Conference teams, a student-athlete must have met or exceeded the following minimum requirements: started in at least half or played in at least two-thirds of the team's competitions as a significant contributor and achieved a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

The NE10 is an association of 14 diverse institutions serving student-athletes across 24 NCAA Division II sports. Together we build brilliant futures by embracing the journey of every student-athlete. 

Each year, 4,500 of those student-athletes compete in conference championships in 24 sports, making the NE10 the largest DII conference in the country in terms of sport sponsorship.
