Women's Basketball Cruises to 2-0 with 74-45 Win Against UDC

Graduate student Karlee Ziliak (Evansville, Ind.) scored 12 points and dished five assists, and classmate Meg Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) narrowly missed a double-double, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team made it a perfect 2-0 weekend with a 74-45 triumph over the University of the District of Columbia on Sunday afternoon at Caldwell University's Corino Court.

  • Graduate student Gyanna Russell (E. Hampton, Conn.) – 11 points (5-7 FG, 1-2 FT), 7 rebounds
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire opened the game on a 13-2 run over the opening 4:10, with five points from Timberlake and four from Russell leading the way. SNHU would lead it, 25-11, after the first quarter.
  • The Penmen scored the first six points of the second stanza to go up 31-11 less than three minutes in and brought a 44-25 advantage into the locker room.
  • Four points from Russell powered an 8-2 stretch to begin the second half that expanded the Penmen lead to 52-27 with 5:56 remaining in the third.
  • SNHU grabbed its largest advantage of the game when it kicked off the final frame with a 12-2 blitz that made it 72-40 with 3:18 on the clock. Sophomore Jessica Knight (Hanover, Mass.) scored six points during the stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Senior Jenna Roche (Braintree, Mass.) stuffed the stat sheet with six points (2-4 FG, 2-2), five rebounds and four assists.
  • Knight posted eight points (2-5 FG, 4-4 FT) and four boards.
  • Junior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) added four points (2-5 FG), six rebounds and two steals.
  • Senior Danielle Sirois (Pelham, N.H.) tallied four points (1-5 FG, 2-2 FT) and two assists.
  • Sophomore Julia Colby (So. Parris, Maine) chipped in three points (1-4 FG, 1-3 3-FG) two rebounds and two assists.
  • SNHU outshot UDC, 47.5 percent (28-59) to 26.2 percent (17-65), including 36.8 percent (7-19) to 14.3 percent (3-21) from beyond the arc, and 91.7 percent (11-12) to 66.7 percent (8-12) from the stripe.
  • SNHU won the glass (47-35), featured a batter assist-to-turnover ratio (20/15-4/14), captured the paint (38-26) and scored more bench points (22-12), while UDC held a slight edge in points off off turnovers (13-10) and second chance points (10-4).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire begins the season 2-0 for the third time in the last five seasons and the first time since 2018.
  • Through the opening weekend, Timberlake is fourth in the NE10 in scoring (20.5 ppg).

  • The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Nov. 17 (5:30 p.m.) when they play host to Assumption University in a contest that will air live on WGIR 610-AM.
