Graduate student Gyanna Russell (E. Hampton, Conn.) scored a team-high 13 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team endured a tough shooting night in a 70-52 loss to Assumption University on Wednesday evening in its home opener at the Stan Spirou Field House.

  • Russell – 13 points (5-14 FG, 3-5 FT), 4 rebounds, 2 steals
  • Graduate student Karlee Ziliak (Evansville, Ind.) – 11 points (5-11 FG, 1-4 3-FG), 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks.
  • Grad student Meg Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) – 8 points (3-10 FG, 2-2 FT), 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 steals
KEY MOMENTS
  • Assumption led by one less than four minutes into the contest when an 11-2 burst – bookended by Emme Poulin 3-pointers – opened up a 16-6 lead for the visitors with 4:46 remaining in the opening quarter. The Greyhounds would score the final five points of the stanza to grab a 21-9 lead after one.
  • Assumption made it a 12-0 stretch, as it scored the first seven points of the second quarter – with the final five coming from Amanda Mieczkowski – to widen the gap to 28-9 just 1:11 in. The 'Hounds would bring a 40-22 lead to the locker room.
  • The Greyhounds would snag their largest lead of the contest at 67-44 with 4:44 to play in the final frame, before cruising to victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) posted six points (2-11 FG, 2-3 FT), eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • Junior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.) netted five points (2-10 FG, 1-5 3-FG).
  • Sophomore Jessica Knight (Hanover, Mass.) chipped in four points (2-3 FG).
  • Assumption outshot SNHU, 42.6 percent (23-54) to 27.8 percent (20-72), including 50 percent (10-20) to 10.5 percent (2-19) from beyond the arc, and 82.4 percent (14-17) to 71.4 percent (10-14) from the stripe.
  • The Penmen won the paint (32-18), had more points off turnovers (20-13) and held a slight edge on the fast break (12-11), while the Greyhounds captured the glass (45-41) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (15/25-7/18). Bench scoring (13-13) and second chance points (11-11) were both even.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire is 2-1 for the second consecutive season and also begins the year 0-1 in league play for the second straight season, as it lost to Assumption (61-51) on Nov. 23, 2019 in its NE10 lid-lifter.
  • Assumption leads the all-time series with SNHU, 35-18, and has captured eight of the last 10 meetings, including six-in-a-row.
  • Through three games, Knollmeyer is third in the league in rebounding (10.3 rpg).

  • The Penmen return to action Saturday, Nov. 20 (1:30 p.m.) when they play host to Georgian Court University at the Field House.
