Sophomore Matt Becht (Vienna, Va.) hit for a game-high 25 points on 6 of 9 shooting from downtown to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team to an 89-85 win against Assumption University on Wednesday night in its home opener at the Stan Spirou Field House.

KEY MOMENTS
  • In a game that featured 19 lead changes and eight ties, neither team led by more than six in the opening half. Assumption held a 33-28 lead with just over three minutes to go in the first half when Southern New Hampshire closed the period on a 9-2 run that saw four different scorers. The final four points came from Gray, as the Penmen took a 37-35 lead into the break.
  • SNHU held on to a one-point lead with under five minutes on the clock when a 12-5 stretch – with four points from Long and three each from Becht and Layman – gave the Penmen their largest lead of the night at 81-73 with 1:55 to go. Assumption countered by scoring 12 of the next 18 to slash its deficit to 87-85, but Sanders drilled a pair of free throws with less than three seconds remaining to ice the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman Ethan Okwuosa (No. Haven, Conn.) produced an efficient 11 minutes off the bench, scoring nine points on 4 of 5 shooting, including 1 of 2 from deep.
  • Freshman Jordan Brathwaite (Silver Spring, Md.) chipped in two points (1-1 FG), four boards and a pair of blocks in 14 minutes.
  • SNHU outshot Assumption, 47.7 percent (31-65) to 44.4 percent (32-72), including 41.7 percent (10-24) to 31 percent (9-29) from beyond the arc.
  • The Penmen were plus-5 at the line, despite being narrowly outshot, 75 percent (12-16) to 73.9 percent (17-23).
  • SNHU submitted a better assist-to-turnover ratio (14/11-13/13), dominated the fast break (14-3) and held a slight edge in points off mistakes (13-11), while the Greyhounds captured the glass (42-34), won the paint (42-28), scored more second chance points (23-14) and received more scoring from their bench (20-14).

  • Southern New Hampshire is 3-0 for the fifth straight season.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with Assumption, 35-15, and has won 13 of the last 15 meetings, including two-in-a-row.
  • Becht leads the league in 3-pointers made (13), while his 50 percent shooting clip from long range is the highest of anyone in the conference with at least 22 attempts.
