Sophomore Julia Colby (So. Parris, Maine) scored a career-high 15 points to help lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 78-63 triumph over Lake Superior State University in its final game at the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel Classic on Sunday afternoon at Saint Leo University's Marion Bowman Activities Center.

  • Colby – 15 points (6-9 FG, 3-3 3-FG), 3 rebounds
  • Graduate student Gyanna Russell (E. Hampton, Conn.) – 12 points (3-6 FG, 6-6 FT), 5 rebounds
  • Graduate student Karlee Ziliak (Evansville, Ind.) – 11 points (4-12 FG, 3-7 3-FG)
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 9-2 lead over the opening three-and-a-half minutes as four different scorers combined on the run. SNHU would lead it, 17-10, at the end of one.
  • The Penmen kicked off the second half with a 15-4 burst that gave them their largest lead of the day at 46-27 with 5:03 left in the third. Russell scored the first eight points during the run, while Colby added the final five.
  • The Lakers would score eight straight at one point in the final frame to get them as close as nine, but SNHU countered with six straight to neutralize the run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Graduate student Meg Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) scored nine points (3-8 FG, 3-6 FT), grabbed 13 rebounds, dished four assists and made a pair of steals.
  • Sophomore Jessica Knight (Hanover, Mass.) posted eight points (3-11 FG, 2-2 FT) and eight rebounds.
  • Junior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.) netted seven points (3-7 FG, 1-3 3-FG) to go with two rebounds, two assists and three steals.
  • Senior Jenna Roche (Braintree, Mass.) chipped in four points (2-7 FG) and four rebounds.
  • Junior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) tallied four points (4-4 FT), four boards and four assists.
  • Freshman Megan Deans (Winterport, Maine) added four points (1-1 FG, 2-2 FT) and two rebounds.
  • SNHU outshot Lake Superior, 39.7 percent (27-68) to 33.9 percent (21-62), including 36.8 percent (7-19) to 4.8 percent (1-21) from beyond the arc.
  • SNHU also shot it better from the line, 85 percent (17-20) to 83.3 percent (20-24).
  • The Penmen won the glass (48-37), scored more points off mistakes (15-12) and on the fast break (18-8), submitted a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (15/13-8/16) and received more scoring from their bench (35-8). The paint (28-28) and second chance points (12-12) were even.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, which is receiving votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, has won seven of its last eight.
  • SNHU is off to its best start to the season since 2015-16 when it also began the year 9-2.
  • This was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
  • Russell is the only Penmen to have scored in double figures in all 11 games this season.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Thursday, Dec. 30 (12 p.m.) when they travel to take on Dominican (N.Y.) College.
  • The next home contest for SNHU is Sunday, Jan. 9 (1:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Adelphi University at the Stan Spirou Field House.
