MANSFIELD, Mass. – Redshirt-junior Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was chosen as the Northeast-10 Player of the Week, while graduate student Wesley Tobin (Portsmouth, N.H.) landed NE10 Pitcher of the Week honors, both for the period ending March 28, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The Penmen, ranked 20th in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll, went a perfect 4-0 last week to begin the season, as they outscored Stonehill College, 28-7, in a four-game sweep.
Mulcay got off to a blistering start to the year, slashing .600/.647/1.600/2.247, as he went 6-for-10 with three home runs, a double, eight RBI, six runs scored and five walks. Mulcay had at least two hits, a home run and two RBI in each of the first three games of the year, going 6-for-7 with the four extra-base hits during that stretch.
Tobin was dominant in his first start of the season, hurling a two-hit, complete-game shutout, while striking out 11 and not walking a batter, in an 8-0, seven-inning victory at Stonehill on Saturday. Tobin retired the first eight batters he faced, then allowed back-to-back hits in the fourth inning, before finishing by setting down the final 12 he faced.
Mulcay, Tobin and the Penmen are back in action Saturday, April 10 when they open their home slate with a doubleheader against crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College that begins at noon from Penmen Field.
