Women's Volleyball Halves Pair of Matches to Open Season

Penmen rolled to 3-0 victory over Le Moyne to cap Saturday's action

Juniors Juliana Pacini (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Dai Thawnghmung (Lowell, Mass.) combined for 54 kills, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Stan Spirou Field House. SNHU was downed by Post University, 3-1, in the opener, before resting in the middle tilt of the tri-match and then coming back to blank Le Moyne College, 3-0.

  • Pacini – 31 kills (4.43 k/s), .216 pct., 5 aces, 21 digs (3.00 d/s)
  • Thawnghmung – 23 kills (3.29 k/s), .275 pct., 3 aces, 16 digs (2.29 d/s)
  • Senior Grace Pierce (Fairfax, Va.) – 16 kills, .394 pct., 6 digs, 2 blocks
  • Graduate student Sara Montefameglio (Turin, Italy) – 54 assists (9.0 a/s), 4 aces, 12 digs (2.00 d/s)
  • Freshman Deanne Wilson (No. Collins, N.Y.) – 44 digs (6.29 d/s)
KEY MOMENTS – POST MATCH
  • The first set was tied, 24-all, when a kill and ace from Post put it up, 1-0.
  • SNHU trailed, 24-21, in the second, when kills from Pacini and Thawnghmung trimmed the deficit to one, but an ensuing service error gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – POST MATCH
  • Set scores were 26-24, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18.
  • Pacinini led the way with a match-high 18 kills, 15 digs and two aces.
  • Thawnghmung also recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs, to go with a trio of aces.
  • Freshman Chiara Di Valerio (Terni, Italy) added eight kills, 15 digs and two aces.
  • Montefameglio dished 24 assists and registered eight digs, while junior Ainsley Knox (Houston, Texas) passed out 23 helpers.
  • Pierce chipped in seven kills, five digs and a pair of blocks.
  • Wilson recorded a match-best 27 digs.
  • Freshman Carmen Bernardis (Trieste, Italy) turned in five kills and two blocks.
  • SNHU outhit Post in the middle two stanzas, as well as overall, .185-.159.
  • The Eagles held a 9-3 advantage in blocks.
KEY MOMENTS – LE MOYNE MATCH
  • Leading the match, 2-0, with the third set tied at 16, the Penmen reeled off five straight, highlighted by a pair of Pacini kills, to open a 21-16 advantage. Le Moyne would tally four of the next five to trim the deficit to 22-20, but kills from senior Ramona Fontaine (Chelsea, Mass.), Pacini and Thawnghmung sealed it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – LE MOYNE MATCH
  • Set scores were 25-14, 25-18, 25-20.
  • Pacini again paced the Penmen with a match-best 13 kills (.258), six digs and three aces.
  • Thawnghmung posted 12 kills (.375) and four digs.
  • Pierce recorded nine kills (.571).
  • Montefameglio tallied 30 assists, three aces and four digs.
  • Wilson added 17 digs.
  • Fontaine chimed in with five kills (.364), a block and two digs.
  • SNHU outhit Le Moyne in all three sets, as well as .243-.085 for the match.
  • The Dolphins owned an 8-2 margin in blocks, while SNHU doubled them up in aces, 8-4.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire records a win on the opening day of the season for the second straight campaign.
  • The meeting between the Penmen and Eagles was the first since 2015. Southern New Hampshire had won four straight before Post has now captured two-in-a-row.
  • SNHU has now won six of nine against Le Moyne, including three of the last four and two straight.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Sunday (Sept. 5) when they host the remaining three matches of their portion of the SNHU/Saint Anselm Tournament at the Field House. The Penmen take on Bloomsburg University at 10 a.m. and Felician University at 3 p.m. Le Moyne and Felician play the middle match at 1 p.m.
