Penmen Take Down Previously Unbeaten Assumption 58-49

Koivisto Double-Double Helps SNHU To Seventh Straight Win

SNHU turned a strong first half into a 58-49 victory over previously undefeated #11/23 Assumption University on Saturday at the Stan Spirou Field House.   The Penmen's seventh straight win moves them into a tie atop the NE10 standings.

  • Senior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.) – 15 points (6-18 FG, 1-7 3-FG, 2-4 FT), 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals
  • Senior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) – 11 points (4-12 FG, 2-6 3-FG, 1-2 FT), 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals 
  • Junior Jess Knight (Hanover, Mass.) – 11 points (4-10 FG, 3-4 FT), 7 rebounds
  • Junior Julia Colby (So. Paris, Maine) – 6 points (2-4 FG, 2-2 FT), 6 rebounds, 2 assists
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Penmen opened a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, holding the Greyhounds to just 1-for-13 shooting.  Three-point field goals by Koivisto and freshman Emily Greenwood (Manchester, N.H.) helped the Penmen to 5-for-11 shootings.
  • SNHU extended the lead to 34-12 at halftime and built up a lead of as large as 27 points in the third quarter at 47-20 after a driving layup by sophomore Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.).
  • The Greyhounds turned up the defense, holding the Penmen just to one field goal over the game's final 13:15, but the Penmen were able to hit seven-of-10 free throws down the stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SNHU shot 36.2% (21-58) for the game compared to just 25% (15-60) for the Greyhounds.  Each team hit five three-pointers with the Penmen 5-18 and Assumption 5-22.
  • The Penmen had a slim 45-44 edge on rebounds but outscored the Greyhounds 28-18 in the paint.
  • From the line, the Penmen hit 73.3% (11-15) and the Greyhounds hit 63.6% (14-22).
  • Each team had 19 turnovers, six second-chance points, and ten bench points.
NOTES
  • Assumption was ranked 11th in the D2SIDA poll and 23rd in the most recent WBCA Coaches Poll.
  • A second straight win in the series moves SNHU to 20-35 all-time against Assumption.
  • The Penmen have won seven straight games for the first time since opening the 2015-16 season with eight consecutive wins. 
  • SNHU improves to 30-9 (.769) since the start of the 2021-22 season.
  • It was Koivisto's second double-double of the season.  The 11 rebounds were a new career-high for the senior.
  • Timberlake, who has scored 10 or more points in ten of 11 contests this year, is in the midst of a seven-game, double-digit scoring streak, during which, she is netting 18.4 ppg.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will travel to American International College on Wednesday (Jan. 4) for a 5:30 p.m. conference game with the Yellow Jackets.
  • The next home game for SNHU will be Tuesday (Jan. 10) against the University of New Haven.
  • SNHU is scheduled to meet Assumption a second time on February 18 in Worcester.
