Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) spun a two-hitter, and junior
Abi Gray (Litchfield, N.H.) singled in the top of the seventh to drive in the game's only run as SNHU earned a split of a doubleheader at Saint Anselm 1-0. The Hawks won the opener of Sunday's twin-bill, 6-0, leaving both teams 7-3 in the Northeast 10.
GAME 1 - Saint Anselm 6-0
- The Hawks took control with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. A walk and a bunt single set up the first run with a single by Ava Caputo to make it 1-0. Gracie O'Hara knocked in a pair of runs with a single, and Bre Klaiber hit a two-run homer. Caputo knocked in another run with a double in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- The Penmen had just two hits in the opener against winning pitcher Haile Hicks (W, 12-2), who tossed her fifth shutout.
- Gray led off the sixth inning with a single to break up a no-hit bid, and senior Brittany Mota (Lowell, Mass.) singled in the seventh.
- Sophomore Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) took the loss to fall to 4-3, working the first three innings. Freshman Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) worked the final three innings, allowing one run.
GAME 2 -
SNHU 1-0
- Pitching was the name of the game in the nightcap with Griffin and Sophia DiPippo matching goose eggs until the top of the seventh inning.
- Mota reached on an error to start the decisive frame. Sophomore Ari Ferrier (Middleboro, Mass.) pinch-hit and bunted Mota up to second. Gray followed with a single to produce the run.
- Griffin then returned to the circle and set down the Hawks in order to secure the win, and her second career shutout. Griffin walked one and struck out three.
NOTES
- The Penmen had a six game win streak snapped in the opener. SNHU finished a road swing with a 7-1 record.
- SNHU leads the all-time series with the Hawks 47-46.
- Mota now leads the Penmen with a .300 average with 18 hits in 60 at bats.
UP NEXT
- The Penmen will return to the SNHU Softball Field on Tuesday to play Franklin Pierce University in an NE10 doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m.
