Game 2: Southern New Hampshire 2, Stonehill 1
Records: SNHU 15-17 (9-7 NE10), Stonehill College 11-17 (7-9 NE10)
(Hooksett, N.H.) - The SNHU softball team split a doubleheader on Monday with the visiting Stonehill Skyhawks. Stonehill came from behind in the first game to win 3-2 and SNHU held on in the night cap with a 2-1 win. Sophomore Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) worked a total of 11 innings in the two games, pitching a complete game in the win.

GAME 1 – Stonehill 3-2

  • SNHU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after singles from graduate student Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore Alyssa Dimauro (Chester, N.H.). Griffin scored on a wild pitch and Dimauro scored on an RBI single to left field from senior Emily Carbonneau (Lowell, Mass.).

  • The Penmen held the lead through five innings behind strong pitching from McKechnie, who struck out back-to-back batters in the second inning with runners on first and third and again with a clutch strikeout in the bottom of the third with bases loaded.

  • Stonehill rallied back in the top of the sixth inning on two back-to-back textbook squeeze bunts to score two runs. The winning run in the inning scored on a groundout to the third baseman.

  • The Penmen had seven hits in the opener against winning pitcher Skyler Brandemarte who pitched the complete game and improves to 9-7.

  • McKechnie pitched four shutout innings for the Penmen in the first game, allowing just one hit. Freshman Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) takes the loss, and falls to 6-4 on the season allowing three hits and three runs, all unearned.

GAME 2 – SNHU 2-1

  • The Penmen jumped out again to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff single from sophomore Ari Ferrier (Middleboro, Mass.). She then stole second and scored on a sac fly to center field from sophomore Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine).

  • The Skyhawks tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third inning on a solo homerun from Megan Weis to left field, her first career homerun.

  • Stonehill threatened to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning when a single to second base ricocheted off of McKechnie's glove on the mound. Second baseman Dimauro changed directions to field the ball and threw the runner out at the plate.

  • The Penmen pulled ahead again in the bottom of the sixth inning after a walk to Dimauro; she advanced to third on a bunt from Dickinson and a throwing error. Emily Carbonneau's sharp grounder was misplayed at shortstop, allowing Dimauro to score the winning run.

  • McKechnie pitched a complete second game allowing just two hits, improving to 5-5 on the season.

NOTES

  • McKechnie gave up just three hits and one run on the day, pitching eleven innings. She allowed five walks and struck out nine.

  • Junior Bryn Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) and Carbonneau each had two hits on the day for the Penmen.

  • SNHU leads the all-time series with the Skyhawks 41-39.
