Penmen Win Fifth Straight, Beat Franklin Pierce 12-11 in Overtime

(Rindge, N.H.) - Senior Tristan Pietz (Dudley, Mass.) scored his third goal of the game in overtime to lift SNHU past Franklin Pierce 12-11 on Wednesday afternoon.

  • Graduate student Nolan Isabella (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) - 4 ground balls
  • Senior Alex Sturgess (Derry, N.H.) - seven saves
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Franklin Pierce scored the opening goal at 6:29 of the first period by Stephen Ell, his 26th of the season.
  • The Penmen responded with a 7-1 run to take a five-goal lead late in the first half.  Senior Jeremy Handman (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) tied the game, and two goals apiece for Pietz, Auger, and Terrones carried SNHU.
  • Sophomore Cody Fleming (Plaistow, N.H.) scored his eighth goal of the season with 13:16 left in the fourth quarter to put the Penmen up 9-5, but the Ravens rallied to take an 11-10 lead with 2:16 to play.
  • The Penmen tied the game on a goal by senior Owen McCuin (Hinesburg, Vt.) with just 1:20 left in the fourth quarter.
  •  On the game winner, Terrones fed Pietz behind the cage, and he raced to a low angle and fired home the game-winner.
NOTES
  • SNHU took 46 shots to 26 for the Ravens.
  • The Penmen had a 43-20 advantage on ground balls.
  • Auger (36 points), Terrones (35 points), and Pietz (32 points) lead SNHU in scoring.  Terrones has a team-leading 27 goals, and Auger is tops with 20 assists.
  • Sturgess improved to 4-0 in his starts this year.
  • The Penmen beat the Ravens for a third consecutive time - the last five SNHU wins over Franklin Pierce have been by one goal.  SNHU leads the all-time series 21-4.
  • SNHU moves into sixth place in the standings, a game ahead of Franklin Pierce.  The top six teams will qualify for the NE10 tournament.
UP NEXT
  • SNHU returns to action on Saturday, April 23 (11:00 a.m.) at Saint Michael's College.
  • The Penmen will be home on Tuesday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. to play Bentley University. The Bentley game is the regular season finale and senior day for SNHU.
