Women's Volleyball Splits Opening Day of Florida Trip

Senior Dai Thawnghmung (Lowell, Mass.) posted 12 of her 16 kills on the day in the second-match win, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team split a pair of contests with Eckerd College and Bemidji State University on the opening day of the Flagler Saints Classic at Flagler Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENTS – ECKERD MATCH
  • After trailing by as many as five in the opening set, SNHU climbed to within 11-10, but Eckerd notched 14 of the last 19 points to go in front, 1-0.
  • The Penmen jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second stanza, but a 14-3 counter-run from the Tritons gave them a 15-7 lead they would never give back.
  • SNHU fought hard in the third set, but, with the scored tied, 13-13, Eckerd tallied 12 of the final 17 points to claim the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – ECKERD MATCH
  • Set scores were 25-15, 25-18, 25-18.
  • Pacini led the way for the Penmen with seven kills and seven digs.
  • Pimenta posted five kills, two digs and a pair of blocks.
  • Thawnghmung tallied four kills and seven digs.
  • Montefameglio recorded 14 assists and seven digs.
  • Wilson collected a team-high nine digs.
  • Eckerd outhit SNHU in all three sets, as well as .245- -.010, overall.
  • The Tritons held advantages in aces (5-1) and blocks (6-2).
KEY MOMENTS – BEMIDJI STATE MATCH
  • The opening set was knotted at 18-all when Bemidji pulled away with a 7-2 run to go up, 1-0.
  • After SNHU evened the match, set No. 3 was tied, 22-22, when kills by junior Claire Wohlleber (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and sophomore Carmen Bernardis (Trieste, Italy) highlighted a string of three straight points that put the Penmen up, 2-1.
  • The Beavers led, 8-7, in the fourth when six BSU errors led to a 7-1 stretch that saw the Penmen take a 14-9 lead. A second 7-1 charge – with two kills from Thawnghmung – made it 21-12 and Bemidji would never get closer than six.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – BEMIDJI STATE MATCH
  • Set scores were 20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-18.
  • Thawnghmung posted a team-high 12 kills to go with eight digs.
  • Pimenta also reached double digits with 10 kills and four digs.
  • Pacini finished with eight kills and 10 digs.
  • Arletti racked up seven kills (.313), four digs and three blocks.
  • Wholleber chipped in five kills.
  • Montefameglio handed out 30 assists to go with three kills, two aces and four digs.
  • Wilson collected a match-high 18 digs.
  • SNHU outhit Bemidji State in the final three sets, as well as .213-.153 for the match.
  • The Beavers owned advantages in aces (7-6) and blocks (8-4).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire begins the season 5-1 for the first time since 2010.
  • The meetings with Eckerd and Bemidji State were the first in program history for the Penmen.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action finish off their time at the Flagler Saints Classic on Saturday (Sept. 3) when they take on host Flagler College (1 p.m.) and Emmanuel (Ga.) College (5 p.m.).
  • SNHU is back home Tuesday, Sept. 27 (7 p.m.) when it plays host to Saint Michael's at the Field House.
