Women's Volleyball Splits Again on Final Day in Florida

Redshirt-junior Ana Pimenta (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) amassed 29 kills and 38 digs, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team halved another double-dip with Flagler University and Emmanuel (Ga.) College to wrap up its time at the Flagler Saints Classic Saturday at Flagler Gymnasium.

  • Pimenta – 29 kills (3.22 k/s), 1 ace, 38 digs (4.22 d/s), 4 blocks (0.44 b/s)
  • Senior Dai Thawnghmung (Lowell, Mass.) – 25 kills (2.78 k/s), 1 ace, 16 digs (1.78 d/s), 3 blocks (0.33 b/s)
  • Senior Juliana Pacini (Sao Paulo, Brazil) – 23 kills (2.56 k/s), 3 aces, 26 digs (2.89 d/s), 3 blocks (0.33 b/s)
  • Graduate student Sara Montefameglio (Turin, Italy) – 64 assists (7.11 a/s), 5 aces, 28 digs (3.11 d/s)

KEY MOMENTS – FLAGLER MATCH
  • The opening set was even at 23-23, when a kill from Thawnghmung and a Flagler attack error gave SNHU the 1-0 lead.
  • The Penmen found themselves down by four in the second stanza when they notched 13 of the final 19 points – highlighted by four Pacini kills – to go up, 2-0.
  • Flagler responded in the third set by building leads of 12-4 and 16-7, before later scoring the final seven points of the frame to stave off elimination.
  • SNHU was within three in the fourth set, but Flagler would rattle off nine of the final 13 to force a fifth and deciding set.
  • In the fifth, two Thawnghmung kills buoyed a 5-0 spurt that put the Penmen up, 12-7, and just three points away from victory. Flagler had other ideas, however, notching eight of the last nine points to steal the win. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – FLAGLER MATCH
  • Set scores were 23-25, 22-25, 25-11. 25-17, 15-13.
  • Pimenta paced the Penmen with 15 kills, 24 digs and three blocks.
  • Thawnghmung registered 11 kills, eight digs and two blocks.
  • Pacini tallied 10 kills, two aces, eight digs and a pair of blocks.
  • Montefameglio handed out 38 assists, to go with three aces and 14 blocks.
  • Arletti posted six kills (.286), two aces, two digs and three blocks.
  • Wilson collected 14 digs and a pair of aces.
  • Grimes chipped in four kills and five blocks.
  • Flagler outhit SNHU in the final three sets, as well as .196-.122, overall.
  • The Penmen hit a scorching .538 in the opening set.
  • Blocks were even at nine-all, while the Saints owned a 12-10 edge in aces.
KEY MOMENTS – EMMANUEL MATCH
  • SNHU led, 21-20, in the opening set, when a pair of Montefameglio service aces and a Pimenta kill powered a 4-1, set-clinching run.
  • In a back-and-forth second set, the Penmen trailed, 24-23, but Thawnghmung and Pacini kills highlighted a 3-0 blitz that gave SNHU a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Lions stayed alive in the third, scoring the final six points of the set to win by seven.
  • In the fourth, the Penmen trailed, 22-21, when a Wilson kill, two attack errors and an Arletti ace gave them the win. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – EMMANUEL MATCH
  • Set scores were 25-21, 26-24, 18-25, 25-22.
  • Pimenta recorded another double-double of 14 kills and 14 digs.
  • Thawnghmung registered 14 kills and eight digs.
  • Pacini posted 13 kills and 18 digs.
  • Montefameglio handed out 26 assists, while collecting a pair of aces and 14 digs.
  • Wilson gathered 18 digs.
  • Emmanuel outhit SNHU in the first and third sets, as well as .147-.145 for the match.
  • The Penmen held a 7-5 edge in aces, while the Lions returned the favor in blocks (11-5).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire begins the season 6-2 for the first time since 2010.
  • The Penmen fall to 0-2 in the all-time series with Flagler, while the meeting with Emmanuel was the first in program history.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Tuesday, Sept. 20 (7 p.m.) when they take on Bentley University.
  • SNHU is back home Tuesday, Sept. 27 (7 p.m.) when it plays host to Saint Michael's at the Field House.
