Le Moyne Sinks Win Streak for Women's Hoop with 67-49 Victory

Program-best 10-game winning streak comes to a close for Penmen

Senior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.) provided 15 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped with a 67-49 defeat against Le Moyne College on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

  • Sophomore Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) – 8 points (4-11 FG), career-high 9 rebounds, 2 blocks
  • Graduate student Mia Roy (Bedford, N.H.) – 8 points (3-12 FG, 1-3 3-FG, 1-2 FT)
KEY MOMENTS
  • Le Moyne led by as many as six in the opening quarter, but a Timberlake 3-pointer in the final minute trimmed the Southern New Hampshire deficit to 16-13.
  • SNHU led by three at 22-19 just under three-and-a-half minutes into the second stanza when a 13-3 burst from Le Moyne gave it a 32-25 advantage with 48 seconds on the clock. A Roy bucket 10 seconds later made it 32-27 at the break.
  • The Dolphins opened the second half with a 17-4 rush and outscored the Penmen, 22-7, in the third quarter, to seize a 54-34 lead going to the final frame.
  • After Le Moyne grabbed its largest lead of the day at 57-35 less than a minute into the fourth, a pair of Timberlake triples fueled an 8-0 blitz that pulled the Penmen within 57-43 with 6:47 left. SNHU was as close as 14 with two-and-a-half minutes remaining before Le Moyne scored the final four points of the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Julia Colby (So. Parris, Maine) recorded two points (1-3 FG) and five rebounds.
  • Freshman Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) tallied two points (1-6 FG), four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Senior Jenna Roche (Braintree, Mass.) returned to the court after an eight-game absence and chipped in two points (1-4 FG), three boards and three assists in 20 minutes off the bench.
  • Le Moyne outshot SNHU, 43.6 percent (24-55) to 30.2 percent (19-63), including 42.1 percent (8-19) to 28.6 percent (6-21) from beyond the arc. The Dolphins were also plus-6 from the line and narrowly shot it better, 64.7 percent (11-17) to 62.5 percent (5-8).
  • The Penmen gathered more points on the fast break (16-2) and turned in a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (16/16-13/18), while the Dolphins won the glass (43-37) and collected more second chance points (15-6). The paint (26-26) and points off turnovers (11-11) were both even.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, which is receiving votes in the most recent WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and D2SIDA Media Poll, has its program-best, 10-game winning streak halted. It was the longest string of consecutive games since the Penmen won nine-in-a-row in 1987-88.
  • At 7-2 in the NE10, the Penmen drop into second place, a game behind Bentley University.
  • Le Moyne, which leads the all-time series with the Penmen, 31-9, has now won five of the last six meetings between the two teams. SNHU has also dropped four of the last five against the Dolphins in Syracuse.
  • Timberlake, who has scored 10 or more points in 14 of 15 contests this year, is in the midst of an 11-game, double-digit scoring streak, during which, she is netting 18.8 ppg. She ranks second in the NE10 at 17.7 points per game. 
  • SNHU dips to 33-10 (.767) since the start of the 2021-22 season.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 18 (5:30 p.m.) when they play host to cross-town rival Saint Anselm College at the Stan Spirou Field House in a game that will air live on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports 930-AM.
