AIC Halts Winning Streak for Women's Volleyball in Three Sets

Pimenta leads the team with 11 kills for the second time in as many days

Redshirt-senior Ana Pimenta (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) recorded 11 kills for the second straight day, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team were downed in three sets by American International College on Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.

  • Senior Claire Wohlleber (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) – 7 kills (.429), 4 blocks
  • Graduate student Alessandra Peli (Brescia, Italy) – 6 kills, 4 blocks
  • Sophomore Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) – 26 assists, 1 ace, 1 block, 8 digs
  • Junior Deanne Wilson (Buffalo, N.Y.) – 10 digs
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire climbed within 21-18 late in the opening set, but American Int'l reeled off four of the next five points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • AIC jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second stanza and eventually built the advantage to 20-8. A 7-2 counter-run, which including a pair of kills from Pimenta, brought the Penmen within 22-15, but AIC scored three of the next four to grab a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • SNHU held a 22-20 edge in the third frame, but AIC produced four of the next five points to leapfrog the Penmen and take the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Set scores were 25-19, 25-16, 25-23.
  • Graduate student Dai Thawnghmung (Lowell, Mass.) registered four kills and eight digs.
  • Junior Carmen Bernardis (Trieste, Italy) added three kills and a pair of blocks.
  • Junior Chiara Di Valerio (Terni, Italy) collected four digs.
  • AIC outhit SNHU in all three sets, including .239-.167, overall.
  • The Penmen owned an 8-5 edge in blocks, while AIC secured a 9-2 advantage in aces.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire had won five of its last six matches, including three straight, before meeting American Int'l, which has now captured eight of its last 10, including three consecutive matches.
  • The Yellow Jackets improved to 20-7 all-time against SNHU. AIC has won 13 of the last 17 meetings with the Penmen, including eight of the most recent nine and five straight. The Yellow Jackets have also won five of six at home against SNHU, including three-in-a-row. The last Penmen win in the series came Oct. 19, 2018 in Springfield (3-2).
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 31 (7 p.m.) when they head across town to take on Saint Anselm College.
  • The next home match for SNHU is Friday, Nov. 3 (5 p.m.) when it plays host to Pace University at the Stan Spirou Field House.
