Knight's Huge Second Half Powers Women's Hoop to 79-68 Win at Saint Anselm

Senior Jess Knight (Hanover, Mass.) poured in 22 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 79-68 triumph over Saint Anselm College on Tuesday evening at Stouteburgh Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The score was tied at 18 with less than two minutes remaining in the opening quarter when Saint Anselm finished with a 7-2 run to take a 25-20 lead into the second stanza.
  • The Hawks netted the first eight points of the second half to grab their largest lead of the contest at 33-20 just 2:20 in. Southern New Hampshire responded with a 16-2 rush that began with 13 straight points and put the Penmen back in the lead at 36-35 with 48 seconds on the clock. Colby led the way with seven points during the stretch. The game went to the break tied, 38-38.
  • The hosts scored the first four points of the third quarter, but the Penmen answered with 16 straight – with seven from Knight, and four each from Gordon and Timberlake – to seize a 54-42 advantage with 2:38 to play. A 7-2 spurt pulled Saint Anselm within 56-49 going to the final frame.
  • SNHU jumped on the Hawks to begin the fourth, with a 10-2 run – with four points from Knight and key 3-pointers from freshman Abby Wager (Mansfield, Mass.) and graduate student Macy Spinks (Luton, United Kingdom) – that ran the lead to 66-51 just 2:14 in. A pair of Knight free throws would give the Penmen their largest lead of the night at 77-59 with 2:33 remaining, before Saint Anselm ripped off a 9-0 run over the next two-plus minutes to close the gap.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Wager recorded six points (2-4 FG, 2-3 3-FG) and a pair of assists.
  • Spinks, in her return to the place she called home for four seasons, tallied five points (2-6 FG, 1-4 3-FG), four assists and three rebounds.
  • Junior Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) posted four points (1-2 FG, 2-4 FT) and five boards.
  • Southern New Hampshire outshot Saint Anselm, 49.3 percent (33-67) to 41.2 percent (28-68), while the Hawks returned the favor from distance, 33.3 percent (6-18) to 25 percent (6-24). The Penmen were narrowly better at the line, 63.6 percent (7-11) to 60 percent (6-10).
  • The Penmen captured the glass (40-37) and the paint (40-26), scored more points off turnovers (17-10) and second chance points (13-11), and turned in a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (23/12-17/14). The Hawks held a slight edge in fast break points (14-12).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire is 2-0 for the third time in the last five seasons.
  • Saint Anselm leads the all-time series against SNHU, 52-24, and has won 12 of the last 18 meetings, but the Penmen have now won five of six, including three straight. SNHU has also captured four-in-a-row on the road. The Hawks have not defended their home court against the Penmen since Feb. 20, 2019 (71-62).
  • SNHU is now 45-15 (.750) since the start of the 2021-22 season, including 24-7 (.774) away from the Stan Spirou Field House.
  • SNHU earns a point in the Queen City Cup standings and now leads, 12-6, in the Battle for Manchester supremacy. The Penmen also collected a point for the men's basketball team's win over Saint Anselm later Tuesday. It marks the first time SNHU swept a basketball doubleheader at Saint Anselm since Jan. 11, 1988 – a run of 23 twin bills that the Hawks took at least one win from the Penmen.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen are back in action Sunday, Nov. 26 (1:30 p.m.) when they take on Post University.
  • The next home contest for SNHU is Wednesday, Nov. 29 (5:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Saint Michael's College at the Stan Spirou Field House in a game that will air on both WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports 930-AM.
