Fast Start Helps Women's Basketball Down American Int'l, 65-48

Roy matches season-high with 17 off the bench

Senior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree,  Mass.) and graduate student Mia Roy (Bedford, N.H.) combined for 35 points to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 65-48 victory against American International College on Wednesday evening at the Stan Spirou Field House.

KEY MOMENTS
  • After American International scored the first bucket just 33 seconds in, Southern New Hampshire ripped off a 20-0 run over the ensuing 7:27 to open a 20-2 lead with 2:18 left in the opening quarter. Roy led the way with 10 points during the stretch, while Timberlake kicked in five. SNHU would lead it, 25-6, at the end of one.
  • The Penmen would take their largest lead of the half at 34-10 on a Timberlake 3-pointer 3:12 into the second quarter, but AIC would run off 10 straight to climb within 36-22 with 1:50 to go before the break. SNHU would bring a 41-22 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Yellow Jackets would whittle their deficit to 14 at 45-31 a little more than four minutes into the second half, but four from Timberlake and three from Roy made up a 7-0 burst that put the Penmen up, 52-31, with 2:13 remaining. AIC cut it to 52-35 heading to the final frame.
  • SNHU began the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run – powered by six points from Knight – to open up its largest lead of the night at 63-37 a little over four minutes in. AIC would score the final seven points of the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Senior Jenna Roche (Braintree, Mass.) tallied eight points (3-10 FG, 2-4 3-FG), two rebounds and three assists.
  • Freshman Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) notched four points (2-6 FG) and five boards.
  • Sophomore Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) posted three points (1-5 FG, 1-2 FT) and seven rebounds.
  • Junior Julia Colby (So. Paris, Maine) collected three points (1-3 FG, 1-1 3-FG), five rebounds and four assists.
  • senior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) chipped in two points (2-2 FT), seven boards and five assists.
  • During the 20-0 run that spanned most of the first quarter, the Penmen defense held AIC to 0-for-9 shooting and forced seven turnovers.
  • Southern New Hampshire outshot American International, 40 percent (22-55) to 32.2 percent (19-59), including 52.6 percent (10-19) to 16.7 percent (1-6) from long range. The Penmen also held a 60 percent (9-15) to 21.4 percent (3-14) shooting advantage in the first quarter.
  • SNHU also shot it better from the stripe, 78.6 percent (11-14) to 64.3 percent (9-14).
  • The Penmen won the glass (43-35), scored more points on the fast break (8-2), received more scoring from their bench (24-14) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (18/20-8/15), while the Yellow Jackets captured the paint (28-18) and narrowly collected more second chance points (10-9). Points off turnovers were even, 13-13.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has won five of its last six games, including four straight. The Penmen remain tied for second place in the NE10 standings with Assumption University, a half-game back of first-place Le Moyne College.
  • Despite trailing, 25-18, in the all-time series, the Penmen have won the last seven meetings with AIC, as well as nine of the most recent 10. SNHU has also captured five straight against AIC at home, with its last loss coming Jan. 10, 2016 (74-48).
  • Timberlake has reached 10-plus points in 20 of 23 games this season, while Knights has done the same in 19 of 20.
  • After being held under 10 points in eight straight, Roy is averaging 14.5 points per game over her last two.
  • SNHU is 39-12 (.765) since the start of the 2021-22 season, including 18-7 (.720) at home.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen are back in action Saturday, Feb. 18 (1:30 p.m.) when they take on Assumption University.
  • SNHU wraps the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 21 (5:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Saint Michael's College at the Stan Spirou Field House in a game that will air live on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports New Hampshire 930-AM.
