Foul Trouble Dooms Women's Hoop in 63-51 Loss at #23 Assumption

Penmen see top two leading scorers foul-out in defeat

Junior Jess Knight (Hanover, Mass.) notched 16 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team dropped a 63-51 decision to 23rd-ranked Assumption University on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.

  • Knight – 16 points (7-12 FG, 2-4 FT), 4 rebounds
  • Senior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) – 11 points (2-11 FG, 7-8 FT), 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, 1 block
KEY MOMENTS
  • Assumption took the only first-quarter lead larger than two points when it went up, 11-7, with 4:27 to play in the frame. Southern New Hampshire closed the quarter with six of the final seven points to grab a 13-12 edge going to the second.
  • A Knight layup 1:19 in gave the Penmen a three-point lead, but Assumption responded with a 15-4 blitz to open a 27-19 advantage with 2:09 left in the first half. Sophomore Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) would drop in a layup in the final 30 seconds to trim the SNHU deficit to 27-21 at the break.
  • It was still a six-point game two minutes into the third when the Greyhounds used a 16-6 run to extend their lead to 45-29 with 3:15 remaining. Four points from Knight and three from junior Julia Colby (So. Paris, Maine) made up a 7-0 run that slashed the Penmen deficit to 45-36 2:21 left. Assumption would lead, 47-38, heading into the final frame.
  • SNHU crafted a 7-1 run – capped by a 3-pointer from senior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree,  Mass.) – that pulled it within 52-46 at the midway point of the fourth quarter. After forcing a turnover, the Penmen had a chance to potentially make it a one-possession game, but Timberlake was whistled for a charge that fouled her out of the contest with 4:34 on the clock. Assumption responded with an 11-5 run to close the game. Knight also fouled out with 1:19 to go.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Colby tallied eight points (2-4 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 3-4 FT) and five rebounds.
  • Senior Jenna Roche (Braintree, Mass.) recorded six points (3-9 FG), three rebounds, four assists and two steals.
  • Timberlake netted six points (2-5 FG, 1-5 3-FG, 1-1 FT) to go with two steals and a pair of blocks.
  • DeVries chipped in two points (1-3 FG), five rebounds and two assists.
  • Assumption outshot Southern New Hampshire, 41.2 percent (21-51) to 34.6 percent (18-52), including 28.6 percent (4-14) to 12.5 percent (2-16) from beyond the arc.
  • SNHU shot it better from the line, 68.4 percent (13-19) to 60.7 percent (17-28).
  • The Greyhounds won the glass (46-27) and the paint (34-28), scored more points off turnovers (13-12), second chance points (13-0) and on the fast break (9-3), and received more scoring from their bench (12-4). The Penmen turned in a better assist-to-turnover ratio (8/11-10/17).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire had won five of its last six games, including four straight. The Penmen drop into third place in the NE10 standings. They can clinch the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye with a win in the regular-season finale against NE10-winless Saint Michael's College on Tuesday.
  • Assumption, winners of four of its last five and three straight, is ranked 23rd in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll and receiving votes in the D2SIDA Media Poll.
  • Assumption leads the all-time series with SNHU, 36-20, and has captured seven of the last nine meetings, though the Penmen have won two of three. The Greyhounds have also won eight of nine at home against the Penmen.
  • The two teams split the regular-season series, as the Penmen handed the then-11-0 Greyhounds their first loss of the season, 58-49, back on Dec. 31 in Manchester.
  • Knight has reached 10-plus points in 20 of 21 games this season, while Timberlake has done the same in 20 of 24.
  • SNHU falls to 39-13 (.750) since the start of the 2021-22 season, including 21-6 (.778) away from home.

  • The Penmen wrap the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 21 (5:30 p.m.) when they play host to Saint Michael's College at the Stan Spirou Field House in a game that will air live on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports New Hampshire 930-AM.
