Valentine's Hat Trick Leads Penmen

Senior Chris Valentine (Derry, N.H.) scored three goals and senior Ryan Auger (Hampstead, N.H.) tallied twice but SNHU opened NE10 play with a 17-7 loss at fourth-ranked Adelphi on Saturday in Garden City, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • Adelphi kept the Penmen off the board for nearly nine-and-a-half minutes, building a 5-0 lead, before senior Tim Krutz (Cheshire, Conn.) scored off a perfect feed from Valentine.
  • The Panthers dominated the second quarter and took a 10-1 lead at halftime with Logan Tucker scoring three consecutive goals.
  • Valentine's hat trick all came in the third quarter with the goals coming on assists from Pietz, Auger, and junior Jack Terrones (Anaheim, Calif.).  
  • Auger scored twice in the fourth quarter for the Penmen.  His first came off the fourth-quarter face-off won by Marra.  He also scored at 8:01 off a feed from sophomore Aiden Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.) who had raced up the field after an Adelphi turnover.
  • Pietz scored the final goal with 4:37 remaining after racing from behind the cage to bury a shot in the upper corner.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
 
  • Adelphi outshot the Penmen 58-34 for the contest.
  • The Penmen went 11-for-17 on clears while the Panthers were 22-of-23.
  • Neither team was successful in extra man opportunities with SNHU 0-for-3.
  • Adelphi had a slim 32-30 edge on ground balls.
  • Each team made 12 saves in the game.
 
NOTES
  • SNHU falls to 0-13 all-time against Adelphi.
  • The Panthers finished 15-2 last season, falling in the NCAA tournament to Le Moyne.
  • The Penmen have played the first two games of the season on the road and received a vote in this week's USILA/Dynamic 2023 Men's Coaches Division II poll.
  • Valentine (10 points) and Auger (9 points) lead the Penmen in scoring through two games.
  • With 122 career points, Valentine moves into a tie for 17th in program history.
  • Auger, who joined the SNHU program last season, has tallied 57 points (26 goals, 31 assists) in just 15 games.
  • Pietz has 86 career points (42 goals, 44 assists).
  • Eamon Hall (2G, 3A) and Logan Tucker (5G) led the Panthers.
