Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Queens 7-5, 12-2

Junior Alyssa DiMauro (Chester, N.H.) broke a 2-2 tie with a fifth-inning home run and SNHU went on to complete a sweep of a doubleheader at Queens College Saturday.  The Penmen won the nightcap 12-2 after taking the first game 7-5.

KEY MOMENTS GAME 1
 
  • Dickinson delivered a two-out single in the top of the third inning, stealing second and scoring on an error to put SNHU up 1-0.
  • DiMauro reached on a fielders choice ahead of a two-run homer by LaSpina in the top of the fourth to make it 3-0.
  • Queens took advantage of a pair of Penmen errors in the bottom of the fourth inning to rally for a 4-3 lead.
  • In the top of the sixth, SNHU tallied four times.  Hammond knocked in a run with a pinch single and Feldman singled in another run.  Senior Bryn Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded and Dickinson reached on a fielders choice making it 7-4.
  • The Knights pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh inning, but could not any closer.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1
  • La Spina's home run was the first of her career. 
  • The Penmen had seven hits in the game with Resetar going 2-for-2.
  • Freshman Hannah DeRock (Hunt, N.Y.) started in the circle, tossing three scoreless frames.  She allowed one hit, walking two.
  • Senior Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) pitched the final four innings to earn the win.
 
KEY MOMENTS GAME 2 
 
  • The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a double by Dyana Budakowski and an RBI single by Amanda Baez.
  • Queens added another run on a steal of home by Caroline Pescatore in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • SNHU took the lead in the fifth.  Ferrier started the frame with a double and Feldman followed with a triple, scoring on a bunt by Garczynski.
  • Gifford then reached on a fielders choice and Resetar singled.  DiMauro then launched the game-winning homer to make it 5-2.
  • The Penmen added seven runs in the top of the seventh inning.  SNHU had RBI hits by Ferrier, Dickinson, Gifford, and Resetar in the big frame.
  • Hammond allowed five hits in a complete-game effort.  She allowed two runs (one earned), did not walk a batter, and struck out three.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE- GAME 2
  • The 12 runs and 16 hits were both season-highs for the Penmen.
  • Resetar went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Feldman went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • DiMauro was 1-for-5 with the home run, four RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Dickinson, Gifford, and Ferrier also had two hits.
NOTES 
  • The Penmen lead the all-time series with Queens 3-1.  The teams had not met since 2014 in Clermont, Fla.   SNHU also beat the Knights in Coach Robitaille's first season, back in 2006.
  • Hammond tossed the first complete game of her career.  Last season, the sophomore worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen.  This year, she has made six starts.  The win was the ninth of her career.
  • The single by Hammond in the first game was the first hit of her career at SNHU.
  • With the win in the opener, McKechnie improved to 3-3 on the season.  The nightcap marked the first time this season she did not work in a game.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will make up a doubleheader at Chestnut Hill College on Sunday in Philadelphia.  The first game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. 
  • The first home game for the Penmen is slated against The College of Saint Rose on Saturday, April 1.
