Softball Drops Doubleheader at #16 Adelphi

DiMauro goes 3-for-3 in nightcap after Penmen no-hit in opener

Junior Alyssa DiMauro (Chester, N.H.) went 3-for-3 and junior Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine) had a pair of hits, but SNHU softball fell 4-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at 16-th ranked Adelphi University.  The Panthers had won the first game 6-0.

KEY MOMENTS -GAME 1
  • Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Alexa Sacripante doubled to drive in Zee Zee Shreter.
  • Sabrina Morales added a two-run single two batters later to make it 3-0 against Penmen starter sophomore Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.).
  • Sacripante singled to drive in another run in the third for a 4-0 lead.
  • Courtney Wengryn had a two-run double for Adelphi in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1          
 
  • Adelphi's Lindsey Hibbs threw a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in earning her eighth win.  It was her third no-hitter of 2023.
  • Hammond (2-5) allowed three earned runs in four innings for SNHU
  • Wengryn, Sacripante, and Morales each had two RBI for the Panthers.

KEY MOMENTS -GAME 2
  • The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a single by Angela Lignelli.
  • The game stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Brianna Fischer homered and Wengryn had a run-scoring single.
  • SNHU scored its run in the top of the seventh inning on a triple by DiMauro and an RBI groundout by junior Ari Ferrier (Middleboro, Mass.).
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 2
 
  • DiMauro went 3-3 with a triple.
  • Dickinson had the other two Penmen hits with singles. 
  • Junior Leine McKechnie (4-4) went the distance in the circle for the Penmen, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits.  She walked four and struck out four.
  • Adelphi's Claire Fon improved to 6-1 with a complete-game and four strikeouts.
 
NOTES 
  • The Penmen are 6-18 against Adelphi and the Panthers have won the last five meetings since an SNHU sweep back in 2019.
  • Hibbs has performed well against the Penmen over the past two seasons with three shutouts, and a save in four games.   
  • DiMauro has the SNHU team lead with a .339 average with 21 hits in 62 at-bats in 20 games.
  • Freshman Peyton Feldman saw a six-game hit streak snapped with an 0-2 in the opener. 
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The first home game for the Penmen is slated against The College of Saint Rose on Saturday, April 1 at Noon.   SNHU will also host Le Moyne College in NE10 play next Sunday, April 2, on the SNHU Softball Field.
