Men's Lacrosse Wins Opener, 11-10 at Molloy

Valentine Scores Four Goals Saturday

(Rockville Centre, N.Y.) - Senior Chris Valentine (Derry, N.H.) scored four goals and added two assists as Men's Lacrosse opened the 2023 campaign with an 11-10 win at Molloy University on Saturday.  Senior Ryan Auger (Hampstead, N.H.) also had a six-point game with two goals and four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The first goal of the season for the Penmen was scored by Terrones off a feed from Valentine with 8:09 to play in the first quarter, cutting the Lion lead at the time to 2-1.
  • Molloy would take a 4-1 lead, but goals by freshman Matt Antonetti (North Attleboro, Mass.), Valentine, and Marra tied the game at 4-4.
  • The Penmen extended the run to six, scoring three goals to open the second quarter and led 7-5 at halftime. 
  • SNHU never trailed Molloy off in a competitive second half.  Valentine scored the final three goals for the Penmen, including one with 7:21 to play that made it 11-9.
  • Chris Delaney made it 11-10 with six minutes to play.
  • DePaul came up with a save on Mike Rodin with six seconds remaining to secure the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
 
  • SNHU had a 45-37 shot advantage including 23-19 on goal. 
  • The Penmen went 3-for-7 in extra-man situations while the Lions were 1-5.
  • SNHU collected 33 ground balls to 18 for Molloy. 
  • The Penmen were 18-of-19 on clear attempts while the Lions were 21-of-23.
  • Marra recorded 10 ground balls giving him 300 for his career (29 games) - he is already the program career leader.
 
NOTES
  • SNHU improves to 5-11 all-time against Molloy, although they have won three of four against the Lions.
  • The Penmen had been scheduled to open the season with a home game against Bridgeport last Saturday, 2/25, but the game was postponed due to cold weather.  No makeup date has been announced.
  • The Penmen were receiving votes in this week's USILA/Dynamic 2023 Men's Coaches Division II poll.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will open the Northeast-10 Conference season with a game at Adelphi University on Saturday, March 18 at 12:00 p.m.
  • The Penmen will host Le Moyne College on Saturday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m. at Mark A. Ouellette Stadium in Hooksett, N.H.
