Pietz Nets Game Winner, as Men's Lacrosse Takes Down Franklin Pierce, 13-12, in OT

Valentine becomes ninth Penmen to score 100 career goals

Graduate student Tristan Pietz (Dudley, Mass.) collected a team-high five points and scored the game-winning goal 1:08 into overtime, as the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse captured its fourth straight with a 13-12 win against Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday afternoon at Ouellette Stadium. Graduate student Chris Valentine (Derry, N.H.) scored four goals, including the 100th of his career.

KEY MOMENTS
  • After Franklin Pierce scored just under two minutes in, Southern New Hampshire rattled off four straight to take a 4-1 lead after one quarter of play. Valentine scored twice during the stretch, while Pietz tallied a goal and an assist.
  • SNHU collected four of the next five goals to begin the second stanza, including two from Terrones, to open up an 8-2 advantage with 5:37 to play in the opening half. Auger recorded a goal and a helper, with Pietz added a pair of assists. The Ravens scored with just under three minutes on the clock to trim their halftime deficit to 8-3.
  • FPU opened the second half with three straight to pull within 8-6 with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter. Auger started a three-goal run just 42 seconds later and the Penmen reclaimed some breathing room at 11-6 with 3:51 to play.
  • The Ravens ended the frame with three straight and then scored the first two of the fourth quarter to pull even at 11-all with 9:54 to go. Valentine gave the Penmen a 12-11 lead with 6:43 on the clock, but Joe Nutting would score his fifth of the game to tie it with 3:27 remaining in the contest.
  • In overtime Auger set up Pietz for the game-winner just 1:09 in to send SNHU to victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Franklin Pierce goalie Mike Masterpolo racked up 27 saves.
  • Senior Tim Krutz (Cheshire, Conn.) notched a pair of assists.
  • Southern New Hampshire outshot Franklin Pierce, 57-49, including 3-0, in overtime.
  • SNHU held a 36-17 advantage in ground balls.
  • The Penmen were successful on all 13 of their clears, while the Ravens were 23-for-26.
  • SNHU turned it over 12 of the 20 times in the game.
  • The Penmen were 2-for-2 in man-up situations, including a locked in penalty on which they scored three times. The Ravens were 2-for-5.
NOTES
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with Franklin Pierce, 22-4, and has won six of the last eight, including four straight.
  • Valentine becomes the ninth member of the program to reach the 100-point plateau and the first since Keifer Heckman in 2017.
  • Valentine (103 goals, 35 assists) has 138 career points, which ranks 13th all-time in program history.
