Offense Comes Alive As Softball Beats AIC 8-3 To Split Monday Doubleheader

Records: SNHU 17-19 (10-10 NE10),  AIC 7-35 (3-17 NE10)
 
Junior Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) and junior Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine) each drove in a pair of runs as SNHU topped American International College 8-3 to earn a split of Monday's doubleheader.  The Penmen dropped the opener 3-2 in 10 innings.

KEY MOMENTS -GAME 1
  • The Penmen trailed 1-0 heading to the sixth, when Gifford walked and junior Alyssa DiMauro (Chester, N.H.) singled.  Lineman doubled to tie the game.
  • SNHU went ahead in the top of the tenth.  Gifford bunted placed runner junior Ari Ferrier (Middleboro, Mass.) to third, and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Resetar.
  • AIC ended the nearly three-hour marathon with two runs in the bottom of the inning with Alexis Jimenez delivering the game-winning single.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1          
 
  • The Penmen outhit the Yellow Jackets 9-8. 
  • Sophomore Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) worked the first three innings, and McKechnie went the final 6.2 innings.
  • Jimenez went the distance for AIC, allowing two runs, one earned in 10 innings. 
KEY MOMENTS -GAME 2
  • A pair of walks set up the first Penmen run in the top of the first inning, as Gifford delivered the RBI single to plate senior Bryn Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.)
  • After AIC tied the game, SNHU went ahead for good with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Garczynski had an RBI single and two more runs scored on a single by Resetar, and an error on the Yellow Jackets.
  • Dickinson delivered a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to make it 6-3
  • Gifford had a sacrifice fly and Lineman singled home another run in the sixth for the Penmen to extend the lead to 8-3.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 2
 
  • Eight of the nine in the starting line-up had at least one hit for SNHU.  The Penmen had eight hits and drew eight walks.
  • Sophomore Hannah DeRock (Hunt, N.Y.) started in the circle, allowing two runs in her three innings.  McKechnie went the rest of the way to earn the win.
 
NOTES 
  • With three hits, DiMauro now has 101 career hits - her .327 average leads the team.
  • Dickinson leads the team with four homers and 22 RBI.
  • SNHU had a six-game win streak against the Yellow Jackets snapped in the opener.  The Penmen trail the all-time series 32-17 but have won seven of eight.
  • The 10-inning opener was the longest game of the season, and the longest since the Penmen went 12 innings to beat Assumption on April 23, 2022.
  • SNHU, at 10-10 in the NE10, is currently tied for eighth place with Assumption (9-9).
  • The top eight teams will participate in the Northeast-10 Championship.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • SNHU will play the final four games of the regular season at home.  The Penmen will host Southern Connecticut State University on Friday (4/28) at 2 p.m. and the University of New Haven (4/29) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
