Softball Beats Southern Connecticut 4-1 To Secure Split

SNHU Will Play New Haven Saturday With Playoff Spot On The Line

Junior Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) allowed one run over six innings to lead SNHU to a 4-1 win over Southern Connecticut on Friday to earn a split of the NE10 doubleheader.  The Owls won the opener 2-1.  Sophomore Jordyn Resetar (Hanover, Pa.) had two hits, including an RBI double.

  • McKechnie – 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K (also pitched in relief in first game)
  • Sophomore Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) – 6.2 IP – 4 H – 2 R- 1 ER

  • Junior Jill Johnson (Raynham, Mass.) – 1-3, RBI

KEY MOMENTS -GAME 1
  • The Owls scored a pair of runs, taking advantage of two Penmen errors, in the top of the second inning.  Dominique Delutri drove in a run with a double.
  • The Penmen cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning.  Junior Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) singled and freshman Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) walked.  After a wild pitch, junior Ari Ferrier (Middleboro, Mass.) put SNHU on the board with a sac fly.
  • Resetar had the only other hit for the Penmen, a single to start the fourth.
  • Hammond worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning to keep the Penmen within a run.
  • Glynos made her first appearance of the season, retiring Ally Petrella on a grounder to finish up the sixth inning.
  • McKechnie set down the Owls in order in the seventh.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1          
 
  • The Penmen were outhit by Southern Connecticut 4-2. 
  • Jessica Perucki went the distance in the circle for the Owls for her ninth win.  She struck out eight, retiring the final 11 Penmen in order.
KEY MOMENTS -GAME 2
  • SNHU scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.  Gifford singled and Resetar doubled into the left-center field gap to make it 1-0.
  • The Owls tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Saab.
  • The Penmen bounced back with three in the bottom of the inning.  Freshman Olivia Mason (Derry, N.H.) scored from third on a squeeze bunt by Johnson. 
  • Gray scored when junior Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine) reached on an error.
  • Garczynski made it 4-1 with her RBI single to drive in Dickinson.
  • McKechnie pitched all but the sixth inning, when Hammond set down Southern Connecticut in order.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 2
 
  • The Penmen had eight hits by eight different players.
  • Southern Connecticut had only three singles in the game. 
 
NOTES 
  • On Senior Day, the Penmen recognized the accomplishments of the team's three captains, Garczynski, Gray, and Glynos.
  • The Penmen are 11-11 in Northeast-10 play and in a three-way tie for sixth place with Le Moyne (12-12), Assumption (11-11), and New Haven (11-11).  Three of the four teams will qualify for the NE10 Championship.  One of the four will host a playoff game.
  • SNHU can control its own destiny for a playoff spot by sweeping Saturday's doubleheader with New Haven, the final day of the regular season.
  • SNHU is 4-2-1 against Southern Connecticut since 2018, including a playoff win last year.   The Owls have a 46-19-1 advantage in the all-time series.
