Jeffrey Praml (Bridgewater, N.J.) was selected as the Northeast Division Pitcher of the Year and
Scott Loiseau was honored as the Bob Bellizzi Coach of the Year, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team had 13 collect All-Conference recognition when the league office handed out its end-of-the-year awards Wednesday.
Schwartz, who is just the second NE10 Player of the Year for the program and the first since
Zach Goldstein in 2017, also claimed a spot on the NE10 All-Conference First Team. Schwartz is in the midst of an all-time season, batting .412 (70-170) with 12 home runs, 63 RBI and 58 runs scored. He has piled up 33 extra-base hits, including 19 doubles, and has drawn 28 walks, to craft a slash line of .498/.759/1.257. Behind the plate, he has played errorless baseball over 287 chances, by far the highest number of chances with a perfect fielding percentage in the league. The next closest has made 179 flawless plays.
Schwartz leads the NE10 in batting, hits, RBI, runs, slugging percentage, total bases (129), doubles (19) and fielding percentage, while ranking second in on-base percentage, third in home runs, and 11th in walks. In the single-season program record book, Schwartz ranks first in batting, second in doubles, third in RBI, fourth in home runs and ninth in hits. He was a Second Team selection in his first season with the team a year ago.
Praml, who also joined Schwartz on the First Team, is the fourth Penmen to earn the NE10 Pitcher of the Year accolade and the first since
Nick Artymowicz in 2021. Praml returned to the Penmen this season and picked right back up with his dominant form. Over 12 starts, he is 9-3 with a 2.67 ERA, striking out 66 over 81 innings. Opponents are batting .240 against him. Praml is leading the conference in wins and innings pitched, while placing fifth in strikeouts and ERA. His nine wins are tied for the third most in a single season in program history. Praml was a First Team selection in 2019 and a Third Teamer in 2021.
Loiseau collects his league-best sixth NE10 Coach of the Year honor, including his third straight. Only three other coaches in the history of the league have ever received the award three times and Loiseau is the only one to win it more than four times. He guided the Penmen to a 37-10 mark in the regular season, including a stellar 23-1 record in NE10 play. SNHU won a program-record 24 straight games from March 24-April 28, with the winning streak serving as the longest in the nation at any level, while it was active. The Penmen won the NE10 Northeast Division for the sixth straight season and seventh time, overall, with the .958 winning percentage in league play ranking as the second best in the history of the conference. SNHU led the league in runs, batting average, home runs, walks, stolen bases, ERA, strikeouts and fielding percentage.
Schwartz and Praml were joined on the First Team by juniors
Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.),
Cam Caraher (Plymouth, Mass.) and
Mike La Rocca (Vero Beach, Fla.). The five First Team selections for the Penmen were two more than anyone else in the league.
Rivera, who also claimed an at-large spot on the All-Defensive Team, is hitting .380 (65-171) with eight home runs, 35 RBI and 57 runs scored. He has walked 35 times to bolster a .486 OBP and also has 23 extra-base hits, including 14 doubles, for a .614 slugging mark and 1.110 OPS. Rivera is 46-for-54 stealing bases and has made 188 of 200 plays at shortstop. Rivera has hit safely in 38 of the 45 games he has played in this season, including 23 straight from March 26-May 9. He leads the league in steals, while placing second in runs and walks, third in hits, fourth in total bases (105), fifth in OBP, sixth in batting, eighth in doubles, 12th in slugging, 13th in home runs and 24th in RBI. In the single-season book, he is currently seventh in batting and RBI, and eighth in home runs.
Graduate student
Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.) was recognized with a spot on the Second Team for the second straight season. In 12 appearances, including 11 starts, he has gone 7-4 with a 3.22 ERA, punching out 87 and allowing just 53 hits over 67 innings, while limiting opponents to a .216 batting average. Roberge, who has gone the distance four times, leads the league in strikeouts, while ranking second in complete games, fourth in wins, sixth in innings pitched, eighth in strikeouts per game (11.69) and 13th in ERA.
SNHU had four more on the Third Team, including redshirt-junior
Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.), sophomores
Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Frankie Sanchez (Kendall Park, N.J.), and junior
George Welch (Derry, N.H.).
Mercedes, who also joined Rivera on the All-Defensive Team at third base, is 43-for-146 (.295) with seven homers, 38 RBI and 35 runs scored, with a slash line of .371/.507/.878. He has stolen 15 bases on 19 attempts and logged a .962 fielding percentage, mainly at the hot corner. Missing eight games due to injury lowered most of his rankings, but he still sits 13th in steals, 16th in RBI, 21st in home runs and 25th in doubles (10). Mercedes was a Second Team pick a year ago.
Moreno is hitting .333 (39-117) with four home runs, 26 RBI and 37 runs scored. His 22 walks have helped boost a .441 OBP, while his 13 extra-base hits, including eight doubles, have led him to a .521 slugging mark, for an OPS of .962. He is 19th in the league in OBP, 24th in runs scored and 25th in batting.
Sanchez has made 12 appearances, including four starts, going 5-1 with a 2.33 ERA, striking out 51 and walking only 11 over 46-and-a-third innings. In his four starts, which have come in his last four appearances, he is 4-0 with a 1.08 ERA, giving up just three earned runs over 25 innings, while fanning 23 and issuing only three walks. He ranks third in the NE10 in ERA, 11th in wins and 17th in strikeouts.
In 11 appearances, including eight starts, Welch is 5-0 with a 3.21 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 42 innings. He places third in the league in strikeouts per game (12.64), ninth in strikeouts, and 11th in wins and ERA.
