Graduate student Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.) dropped in 14 points, but Assumption University handed the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team an 81-51 defeat Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.

  • Sophomore Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) – 9 points (4-9 FG, 1-3 3-FG)
KEY MOMENTS
  • Despite giving up the first five points of the game, Southern New Hampshire had the score tied, 9-9, at the 5:42 mark of the opening quarter. Assumption, however, would rip off a 16-4 run to grab a 25-13 lead with just over a minute to play, and closed the first with a 27-16 advantage.
  • Assumption began the second stanza with a 15-4 flurry that expanded its lead to 42-20 with 2:26 to play before the break. The Greyhounds brought a 44-22 advantage to the locker room.
  • The margin was 19 with five-and-a-half to play in the third when Assumption reeled off nine-in-a-row to go up, 60-32, with 2:33 on the clock. It led, 62-36, going to the final frame.
  • SNHU scored 11 of the first 16 points of the fourth, including six from freshman Abby Wager (Mansfield Mass.), to trim the deficit to 67-47 at the midway point of the quarter, but the hosts closed the game on a 14-4 run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Senior Jess Knight (Hanover, Mass.) posted eight points (2-8 FG, 4-6 FT) and five rebounds.
  • Wager tallied eight points (3-7 FG, 2-2 FT), a career-high four assists and a pair of rebounds.
  • Junior Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) notched four points (2-2 FG) and three boards.
  • Junior Megan Deans (Winterport, Maine) recorded four points (2-4 FG), three rebounds and two assists.
  • Graduate student Macy Spinks (Luton, United Kingdom) chipped in a season-high six assists and three rebounds.
  • Assumption outshot Southern New Hampshire, 50.8 percent (31-61) to 40 percent (20-50), including 28.6 percent (6-21) to 27.3 percent (3-11). The Greyhounds were also better from the line, 81.3 percent (13-16) to 72.7 percent (8-11).
  • The Greyhounds captured the glass (34-27) and the paint (44-26), scored more points off turnovers (20-17) and second chance points (11-6), received more scoring from their bench (18-16) and produced a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (24/14-17/22).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hamphire, receiving votes in the latest Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) Media Poll, had won six of its last seven contests, including four straight, but has now dropped two-in-a-row.
  • Assumption, receiving votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, has captured nine of 10, including five straight.
  • Assumption  leads the all-time series with SNHU, 37-21, and has captured eight of the last 10 meetings, though the Penmen have won three of five. The Greyhounds have won nine of 11 at home versus SNHU.
  • SNHU is now 53-20 (.726) since the start of the 2021-22 season, including 28-10 (.737) away from the Stan Spirou Field House.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Jan. 24 (5:30 p.m.) when they play host to cross-town rival Saint Anselm College at the Stan Spirou Field House in a game that will air live on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports New Hampshire 930-AM.
