Volleyball Responds with Three-Set Sweep of Saint Anselm

Sophomore Daya Jean-Baptiste (Miami, Fla.) racked up a career-high 13 kills to help lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory at cross-town rival Saint Anselm College on Tuesday night at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

  • Jean-Baptiste – 13 kills, .571 hitting, 3 blocks, 2 digs
  • Senior Deanne Wilson (Buffalo, N.Y.) – 13 kills, 12 digs
  • Senior Julia Cavalcanti (Vineyard, Utah) – 11 kills, .611 hitting, 1 ace, 1 block, 2 digs
  • Freshman Addie Garn (Gilbert, Ariz.) – 40 assists, 2 aces, 9 digs
  • Senior Eyleen Dias (Plymouth, Mass.) – 16 digs
  • Junior Laura Haas (Londonderry, N.H.) – 3 aces, 8 digs
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire led, 23-22, in a back-and-forth opening set when kills from Garn and Wilson gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.
  • In another frame that saw the teams trade runs, the score was tied at 25, 26, 27 and 28, before kills from Wilson and Jean-Baptiste gave the Penmen a massive set win and a commanding 2-0 advantage in the match.
  • Saint Anselm was within 14-11 in the third, but a 6-2 spurt – with two kills from sophomore Elsa Gilmore (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) – extended the SNHU lead to 20-13.  The Hawks would cut their deficit to four at 21-17, but the Penmen notched four of the next five points, including the match-clinching kill from Jean-Baptiste.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Set scores were 25-22, 30-28, 25-18.
  • Gilmore chipped in five kills and three digs.
  • SNHU outhit Saint Anselm in all three sets, including .276-.149, overall.
  • The Penmen owned a 6-5 edge in aces, while the Hawks returned the favor in blocks, 5-4.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire had lost three straight matches and nine consecutive sets, before the big bounce-back win.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series, 32-29. Saint Anselm has won 10 of the last 17 meetings, but SNHU has also captured six of the last eight tilts dating back to 2021. After dropping five of six at Saint Anselm, the Penmen have now won two-in-a-row.
  • SNHU earns a point in the Queen City Cup standings and now leads, 3-0, in the battle for Manchester supremacy.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen are back in action Friday, Oct. 4 (6 p.m.) when they play host to Bentley University at the Stan Spirou Field House.
