STANDOUT PERFORMERS
KEY MOMENTS
  • New Haven struck first with a Pau Santanach goal just 8:05 in.
  • Southern New Hampshire answered early in the 24th minute when Castro's free kick from 25 yards out glanced off a New Haven defender and redirected into the right side of the net, as it caught the Chargers' goalkeeper leaning in the opposite direction.
  • Sandro Branquinho scored off a header in front early in the 70th minute to put the hosts on top, 2-1.
  • The score stayed that way into the 89th minute, before Herrmann's penalty kick strike pulled the Penmen even.
  • The Penmen had an unbelievable chance to win it with less than 10 seconds remaining when they found themselves with a 2-on-0 opportunity in the box. Sophomore Martin Zapata (Pamplona, Spain) headed a ball from right-to-left for graduate student Martin Fuentes (Pamplona, Spain), who looked sure to put the ball in the back of the net. New Haven' keeper Archie Watts, however, made a spectacular save to keep the match tied.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Senior Preston Neal (Windham, N.H.) stopped two of the four shots he faced.
  • Watts also made two saves on four SNHU bids.
  • SNHU outshot New Haven, 12-5, while shots on target were even, 4-4.
  • The Penmen also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25, is unbeaten in 11 of its last 12 (10-1-1). SNHU clinched the NE10 regular season title with their victory over Bentley University on Oct. 26 and will open the NE10 Championship as the top seed.
  • Southern New Hampshire leads the all-time series with New Haven, 30-4-2. The tie – the first in the series since Oct. 14, 1989 (0-0) at New Haven – halted a 10-match winning streak for the Penmen against the Chargers. The last time the two teams met and finished with a result other than an SNHU win had been Oct. 20, 2012 – a 2-1 road victory for New Haven. The Penmen extend their unbeaten streak in West Haven to 19 (17-0-2). The only road loss in the series for SNHU was Oct. 22, 1983 (1-0).
  • Herrmann pulls even with junior Iago Perez (A Coruña, Spain) with his NE10-leading ninth goal of the season. It is his 17th career tally.
  • Castro's goal is his third of the season and second in as many contests.
  • SNHU is 143-39-25 (.751) over its last 207 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.
UP NEXT
  • The Penmen wrap up the regular season Wednesday, Nov. 6 (7 p.m.) when they play host to cross-town rival Saint Anselm College at Ouellette Stadium.
