Penmen celebrate Senior Night with a victory

Senior Deanne Wilson (Buffalo, N.Y.) notched a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a 3-0 victory against Southern Connecticut State University on Friday evening at the Stan Spirou Field House. 

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Wilson – 11 kills, 2 aces, 11 digs, 5 blocks
  • Sophomore Elsa Gilmore (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) – 9 kills, .316 hitting
  • Junior Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) – 16 assists, 2 aces, 5 digs
  • Senior Eyleen Dias (Plymouth, Mass.) – 14 digs
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire was clinging to a 7-6 lead in the opening set when it ripped off a 9-1 run – jump-started by a pair of aces from senior Julia Cavalcanti (Vineyard, Utah) – to move in front, 16-7. Southern Connecticut eventually pulled within 20-15, but SNHU would score five of the final eight points, including a Wilson ace, to go on top, 1-0, in the match.
  • The second stanza was tied, 15-15, before a 7-2 spurt – with kills from four different Penmen – pushed SNHU in front, 22-17. Southern Connecticut trimmed its deficit to 24-22, but a service error would give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
  • The Penmen held a 17-15 lead in the third when it capped the match with an 8-2 run – led by a pair of kills from Wilson and a pair of aces from junior Laura Haas (Londonderry, N.H.).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-17.
  • Cavalcanti posted six kills, three aces, two blocks and two digs.
  • Junior Caelan Cook (Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.) recorded five kills.
  • Freshman Addie Garn (Gilbert, Ariz.) dished 10 assists, served up an ace and collected four digs.
  • Sophomore Angela Mateos (Seville, Spain) added two kills, five blocks and three.
  • Haas chipped in two aces and three digs.
  • SNHU outhit SCSU in all three sets, as well as .172-.071, overall.
  • The Penmen owned a 10-3 advantage in aces, while the Owls held an 8-7 edge in blocks.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has won three of its last five.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series, 16-15, and has won eight of the last 11 meetings, including five straight. All five victories during the winning streak have come by scores of 3-0. The Penmen have also captured three-in-a-row at home against the Owls.
  • Wilson, Koelb, Dias, Cavalcanti, senior Madison Keating (Milford, N.H.) and graduate student Michaela Choate (Nashua, N.H.) were honored in a Senior Night ceremony prior to the match.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Tuesday, Nov. 12 (7 p.m.) when they play host to cross-town rival Saint Anselm College at the Stan Spirou Field House.
