Paul Greene (Freeport, Bahamas) put together a career day, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team lost to St. Thomas Aquinas College, 81-76, in Saturday evening's season opener at the College of Staten Island's Tournament of Heroes.

KEY MOMENTS
- Neither team led by more than five in a first half that witnessed eight lead changes and a pair of ties. St. Thomas Aquinas brought a 35-34 lead to the locker room.
- The opening 9:20 of the second half saw four ties before a 10-3 run gave STAC a 62-55 lead with 5:57 left. Southern New Hampshire used a 7-1 run later in the stanza to pull within 65-64 with 4:10 on the clock.
- A 7-2 counter-run put the Spartans back up, 72-66, with 2:54 remaining, but SNHU ripped off an 8-2 run to pull even at 74-all with 1:50 to go. St. Thomas Aquinas nailed a jumper with 32 seconds left to take the lead for good at 78-76, SNHU would miss a pair of shots and the Spartans went three of four at the line to seal it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Senior Derrick Grant Jr. (Plainfield, N.J.) posted eight points (2-4 FG, 4-6 FT) and four boards.
- Senior Jordan Brathwaite (Silver Spring, Md.) snagged five rebounds.
- Southern New Hampshire outshot St. Thomas Aquinas, 46.3 percent (25-54) to 44.3 percent (27-61), while the Spartans returned the favor from beyond the arc, 40 percent (8-20) to 29.6 percent (8-27). STAC was also better at the line, 82.6 percent (19-23) to 78.3 percent (18-23).
- The Penmen captured the paint (32-28) and scored more points on the fast break (14-5), while the Spartans won the glass (32-27), scored more points off turnovers (23-20) and second chance points (19-9), received more scoring from their bench (41-10) and turned in a better assist-to-turnover ratio (12/14-15/19).
NOTES
- After winning 14 straight season openers, Southern New Hampshire, which is receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Coaches Poll, has now dropped three-in-a-row, including two straight to St. Thomas Aquinas. The Spartans are also receiving votes in the poll.
- STAC leads the all-time series, 4-2, and has won three of the last four meetings.
