Lineman Hits Grand Slams In Consecutive Innings, Penmen Win Pair

Sophomore Has 3 HR, 11 RBI day - Bruggeman Adds Pair of Homers

Game 1:  Southern New Hampshire University 13, University of Minnesota Crookston 2 (5 inn.)
Game 2:  Southern New Hampshire University 11, Bemidji State University 3 (6 inn.)

Sophomore Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) hit two grand slams, driving in nine runs, as SNHU softball handled Minnesota Crookston 13-2 Wednesday.  Junior Mackenzie Bruggeman (Trumbull, Conn.) hit a pair of homers in the nightcap as the Penmen topped Bemidji State 11-3.

GAME 1:  SNHU 13-2 (5 inn.)
  • SNHU put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning.  Lineman knocked in a run with a fielder's choice and Gifford had a sacrifice fly.
  • A six-run top of the fourth included a grand slam by Lineman to make it 8-0.
  • Lineman hit another grand slam in the top of the fifth inning for a 13-2 lead.
NOTES:
  • The Penmen improve to 2-0 against Minnesota Crookston. The teams had previously met in Orlando in March of 2002.
  • McKechnie improves to 2-2 on the season with a 3.11 ERA. 
  • The Penmen recorded a season-high with 13 runs and 14 hits.
GAME 2: SNHU 11-3 (6 inn.)
  • The Penmen gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning against Bemidji State but responded with four in the bottom of the first.
  • A two-run double by Ferrier gave SNHU a 4-2 lead.
  • Lineman homered to center field in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2.
  • Bruggeman led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer, and her three-run shot completed the run-rule win in the last of the sixth inning.
NOTES:
  • This was the first meeting between SNHU and Bemidji State.
  • Freitas earned his first win in a Penmen uniform, tossing a complete game in the nightcap.
  • Lineman leads the Northeast-10 with four homers and 13 RBI.
     
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will take Thursday off. 
  • The Friday schedule finds SNHU back in Winter Haven to play Edinboro University at 9:00 a.m. and St. Thomas Aquinas College at 11:15 a.m.
