Penmen Top Edinboro, STAC, To Improve to 5-5

Five Players Have At Least Three Hits in Friday Wins

A Balance offense helped SNHU softball reach the .500 mark with wins over Edinboro University and Saint Thomas Aquinas College Friday in Winter Haven, Fla.  Four players had at least three hits on the day including senior Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) who had four.

GAME 1:  SNHU 7-1
  • Five players had two hits for the Penmen and six different players knocked in runs.
  • The game started with consecutive singles by sophomore Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) and Dickinson.  After a fielder's choice, Lineman singled to make it 1-0, Gifford doubled for another run, and Bruggeman added a sacrifice fly.
  • Dickinson had an RBI single in the top of the second inning to make it 4-0.
  • Maura Pasquale homered for the Edinboro run leading off the bottom of the second.
  • SNHU made it 6-1 with a sacrifice fly by Ferrier and a DiMauro single in the third.
  • Ferrier had an RBI double in the top of the fifth for a 7-1 lead.
  • McKechnie went the distance in the circle.
NOTES:
  • SNHU improves to 3-0 all-time against the Fighting Scots.  The teams had last met in 2018 in Clermont, Fla.
  • McKechnie improves to 3-2 on the season with a 2.52 ERA. 
  • The Penmen had season-highs with three doubles and three stolen bases.
GAME 2: SNHU 5-4
  • A competitive game saw four lead changes before the Penmen scored three in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead.
  • Down 1-0, Lineman tied the game in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single to score Dickinson, who had walked.
  • Dickinson's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning put SNHU up 2-1.
  • The Spartans would take the lead in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs.
  • In the decisive fourth, three singles- by freshman Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine), Dickinson, and junior Jordyn Resetar (Hanover, Pa.) tied the game at 3-3.
  • Lineman reached on an error as another run scored, and then Gifford delivered a run-scoring single to plate Resetar for a 5-3 lead.
  • Colbert, making her first appearance of the season in relief of sophomore starter Amelia Freitas (Plymouth, Mass.) allowed an unearned run in the fifth.
  • Colbert retired the final six Spartan hitters to earn the 5-4 win.
NOTES:
  • The Penmen improve to 3-0 all-time against STAC.  All three meetings have taken place in Florida.
  • SNHU's win streak extends to four games.
  • The team batting average is up to .305 with seven players hitting at least .300 through the first ten games of the season.
  • Lineman, off the big day on Wednesday when she drove in 11 runs, leads the team with 15 runs batted in.
  • Lineman and Dickinson both have six-game hit streaks.
  • Dickinson now has 101 career hits.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen conclude the Florida trip with a doubleheader against Molloy College on Saturday (March 8) at 11:00 a.m.  The games will be played at the Space Coast Complex in Melbourne, Fla.
