Gifford Joins 100-Hit Club As Penmen Split DH at New Haven

SNHU has won eight of the last ten games

Senior Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) joined the 100-hit club Sunday as SNHU Softball split a Northeast-10 doubleheader at the University of New Haven.  The Penmen won the opener 5-0 but fell 4-0 in the nightcap.

  • Senior Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) – Win, 3.1 IP – 0 H - 0 ER - 6 K
  • Freshman Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine) – 3.2 IP – 3 H – 0 ER – 2 BB – 3 K
GAME 1:  SNHU 5-0
  • Donovan and McKechnie shared the circle to record the three-hit shutout.
  • Gifford's 100th career hit was a single to lead off the top of the fourth inning. Bruggeman followed with her team-leading fifth home run to put the Penmen up 2-0.
  • SNHU scored three more runs in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Gifford's second career triple started the inning and she scored on a single by DiMauro.
  • Donovan singled and stole second.  Senior Ari Ferrier (Middleboro, Mass.) drew a walk.
  • Feldman broke the game open with a two-run single to make it 5-0.
GAME 2: NEW HAVEN 4-0
  • The Penmen fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Meg Anderson.
  • The Chargers added three more runs in the fifth.
  • Sophomore Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) had two of SNHU's three hits, a single and a double.
  • DiMauro had the other hit for the Penmen.
  • Three pitchers appeared in the game for SNHU with junior Amelia Freitas (Plymouth, Mass.) working 1.1 IP.  Freshman Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) and senior Hannah DeRock (Hunt, N.Y.) finished up. 
NOTES:
  • The Penmen have won eight of the last ten games and sit in fourth place in the Northeast-10 Conference.   
  • Gifford join fellow infielders senior Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine), and DiMauro with 100 career hits.
  • McKechnie won her seventh game of 2024, giving her 27 for her career. 
  • Feldman is hitting a team-leading .382 and she has a team-high 14 multi-hit games.
  • Bruggeman also leads the team with 23 RBI.
  • New Haven has a 34-18 advantage in the all-time series although the Penmen have won seven of the last 10 contests.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will play a doubleheader at Saint Michael's College on Tuesday (2:30 p.m.).
  • The next home games at the SNHU Softball Field will be Wednesday, April 17 against Bentley University.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
