Men's Soccer Shows Resilience In 2-1 Road Loss to Jefferson

Graduate student Martin Fuentes (Pamplona, Spain) scored early in the second half, but SNHU Men's Soccer dropped a 2-1 decision at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia on Saturday.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Jefferson's Gabe Paz opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the contest.
  • Paz stole a pass in the Penmen zone and pushed his shot passed senior Preston Neal (Windham, N.H.).
  • The Rams would take a 2-0 lead with under two minutes to play in the half when Paz converted a penalty kick.
  • The Penmen scored in the 48th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • Zapata launched a deep ball that Fuentes collected in front of the net to score the goal.
  • The Penmen had several scoring opportunities in the final five minutes, but could not find the equalizer.
  • Jefferson stopped a corner kick from the Penmen in the closing seconds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SNHU had an 18-6 shot advantage including 8-3 on goal.
  • The Penmen had an 8-3 edge on corner kicks.
  • There were 13 fouls whistled on the Penmen to 8 for Molloy.
  • Senior goalie Preston Neal (Windham, N.H.) made one save while Jefferson's John Nelson was credited with seven saves.
NOTES
  • The teams have split the only two meetings with the Penmen winning 2-0 at Ouellette Stadium last year against the Rams.
  • The goal for Fuentes was his second of the season.  He also has two assists to lead the Penmen with six points.
  • The Penmen had opened the season with a pair of wins, outscoring the first two opponents 12-0.
  • SNHU is now 134-38-24 (.745) over its last 196 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.

  • SNHU returns to the field for the Northeast-10 Conference opener next Saturday (Sept. 21) against Southern Connecticut State University.  Game time is 4:00 p.m. and the Penmen will welcome Candia Youth Soccer.
