Senior Deanne Wilson (Buffalo, N.Y.) recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team began the season with a 3-1 loss to 25th-ranked Lynn University on Thursday afternoon at the Stan Spirou Field House as part of the SNHU/Saint Anselm Volleyball Opener.

KEY MOMENTS
- Lynn led, 8-6, in the first set when an 8-2 barrage, which included four kills from Samantha Wolf, extended its advantage to 16-8. It was 20-13 when Ula Gorjub reeled off three straight service aces as part of a 5-0 spurt that ended it.
- Southern New Hampshire clung to a 22-21 lead in a back-and-forth second stanza, before Lynn notched three straight points to push the Penmen to the brink at 24-22. SNHU responded, however, with four straight points, including an ace from junior Caelan Cook (Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.), and kills from Cavalcanti and Wilson, to even the match.
- The Fighting Knights were in front, 17-14, in set No. 3 when five straight points as part of a 7-1 blitz made it 24-15.
- SNHU trailed, 17-16, in the fourth when Lynn notched six of the next seven points to go up, 23-17. The Penmen responded with four-in-a-row, including consecutive aces from Cavalcanti, but the Fighting Knights put it away with a pair of points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Set scores were 25-13, 24-26, 25-17, 25-21.
- Cook registered three kills, nine digs and a pair of aces.
- Sophomore Elsa Gilmore (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) chipped in three kills and a pair of digs.
- Junior Laura Haas (Londonderry, N.H.) collected seven digs.
- Lynn outhit SNHU in three of the four sets, as well as .304-.173, overall.
- The Penmen doubled up the Fighting Knights in blocks, 4-2, while Lynn held a 10-9 edge in aces.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire begins the season with a loss for the first time since 2021.
- Lynn now leads the all-time series, 2-0. The first meeting was a three-set win for the visitors in Manchester on Sept. 20, 2013.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Penmen are back at it Friday (Sept. 6) at 4 p.m. when they play host to Franklin Pierce University at the Field House. Lynn and Franklin Pierce will play a neutral-site match at 7 p.m.
