Men's Basketball Controls Final 10 Minutes for 75-67 Win at Saint Michael's

Greene's 18 leads four Penmen in double figures

Seniors Paul Greene (Freeport, Bahamas) and Noah Harris (Manalapan, N.J.) combined for 35 points to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team to a 75-67 victory against Saint Michael's College on Wednesday night at the Ross Sports Center.

 KEY MOMENTS
  • With the game tied at 11-all more than six minutes in, back-to-back Harris 3-pointers sparked a 9-2 run that gave Southern New Hampshire a 20-13 lead wih 12:26 remaining in the opening half. Saint Michael's would climb back within two, but another Harris triple with 33 seconds on the clock sent the Penmen to the break with a 35-30 advantage.
  • A four-point play from Fricas just two-and-a-half minutes into the second stanza triggered an 11-4 burst that gave SNHU the largest lead of the game at 50-37 with 16:04 left. Fricas scored nine of his 11 during the stretch. Saint Michael's responded by ripping off 17-in-a-row, however, to jump into the lead at 54-50 with 11:05 to go.
  • A Harris trey ended a drought of 5:39 for the visitors and ignited a 14-4 blitz that gave SNHU a 64-58 lead with 6:19 left to play. Harris' layup with 9:33 left put the Penmen in front for good at 55-54. He led the way with five points during the stretch. SNHU would go up by seven (68-61) with less than five minutes remaining, while SMC would get as close as 68-64 with 3:47 on the clock.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Royce Williams (Manchester, N.H.) netted seven points (2-4 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 2-2 FT).
  • Senior Jordan Brathwaite (Silver Spring, Md.) posted six points (2-4 FG, 2-4 3-FG) and six boards.
  • Senior Brenden Choate (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in two points (1-3 FG) and a career-high seven rebounds.
  • Southern New Hampshire outshot Saint Michael's, 45.9 percent (28-61) to 37.1 percent (23-62), including 48.3 percent 14-29) to 41.4 percent (12-29) from beyond the arc. Neither team was great from the stripe, but the Penmen were better, 62.5 percent (5-8) to 60 percent (9-15).
  • The Penmen won the glass (39-38) and the paint (24-18), scored more points on the fast break (7-2), received more scoring from their bench (19-3) and submitted a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (19/10-12/11), while the Purple Knights scored more points off turnovers (11-8) and second chance points (14-7).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has now won four of its last six, including two straight.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with Saint Michael's, 46-15, and has won 21 of the last 25 meetings, including 10 of 11 and five straight. The Penmen have also won seven of the last eight on the road versus the Purple Knights, who last defeated SNHU at home on Feb. 6, 2019 (82-72).
  • There is something about the Ross Sports Center that brings out the best in the Penmen shooters. Since the beginning of last season, SNHU has played six games, including a pair of neutral-site NCAA tournament tilts, at the Ross Sports Center. The Penmen have made 78 3-pointers (13.0 per game) on 188 attempts in those contests, good for a 41.4 percent shooting clip. Five of those games saw the Penmen knock down at least 11 triples, including a school-record-tying 19 treys in an NE10 semifinal win over Saint Michael's a year ago.
  • Greene's double-double is his 12th of the season.
  • Over his last three contests, Fricas is averaging 15.7 points per game, while shooting 51.5 percent (17-33) from the field, including 54.5 percent (12-22) from long range.
