Penmen Hold On For 55-54 Win Over Pace

Junior Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) pumped in 16 points and graduate student Stephanie Davis (Windham, N.H.) added 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds as SNHU Women's Basketball held off Pace University 55-54 in NE10 play on Sunday.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Gordon – 16 points (5-13 FG, 6-6 FT), 6 rebounds, 1 steal
• Davis – 12 points (3-8 FG, 1-3 3-FG, 5-8 FT), 9 rebounds
• Sophomore Abby Wager (Mansfield, Mass.)- 7 points (2-7 FG, 1-3 3-FG, 2-2 FT), 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal
• Freshman Taylor Brennan (Southbury, Conn.) – 6 points (3-6 FG), 2 rebounds, 2 assists
• Senior Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) – 2 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 blocked shot

KEY MOMENTS   
• With the game tied at 8-8, SNHU went on an 11-0 run.  Wager hit a three, and Gordon and DeVries had layups before Gordon hit two free throws and another layup.
• The Penmen maintained the lead to halftime, taking a 31-20 lead after another two free throws and a lay-in by Gordon.  She finished the first half with 10 points.
• Pace began a big rally after falling behind 40-24 with 6:18 left in the third quarter to make it 48-41 at the end of the frame.
• Two free throws by junior Matilde Baron (Vicenza, Italy) gave SNHU its final points with 2:56 to play, up 55-47.
• Tower Lorde helped rally the Setters to 55-54 with :41 left and they had one final chance after coming up with a rebound on a missed Penmen shot with 11 seconds left.
• The Penmen played solid defense, coming up with a game-winning rebound after a Lorde hook shot missed in the closing seconds.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Sophomore Ava Winterburn (New Boston, N.H.) finished with 5 points, 3 rebounds and a steal.
• The Penmen shot 17-52 (32.7%) including 4-for-19 (21.1%) from three-point range and 17-of-20 (85.0%) from the line.
• The Setters were paced by Lorde, who scored a career-high 27 points on 11-13 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds.
• Pace was 22-for-55 (40.0%) from the floor, 2-17 (11.8%) from beyond the arc, and 8-for-13 (61.5%) from the line.
• Pace had a 40-33 edge on rebounds and a 32-22 advantage on points in the point.    
• The Setters turned the ball over 18 times and the Penmen had 12 turnovers.

NOTES
• SNHU did not trail in the contest.
• Pace leads the all-time series 22-13 although the Penmen have taken four of the last five contests with the Setters.
• SNHU is 67-31 (.683) since the 2021-22 season started.
• The teams will meet again on February 1 at Pace.

WHAT'S NEXT
• SNHU will head on the road for a pair of games at Assumption University and Adelphi University before returning to the Stan Spirou Field House on Tuesday, January 14 (5:30 p.m.) to play Saint Anselm College.
