Winterburn Shines, but Women's Basketball Falls to Felician

Junior Ava Winterburn (New Boston, N.H.) poured in a team-high 19 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team could not overcome a hot-shooting Felician squad, falling 78-66 Saturday at the Saint Anselm College Opener.
KEY MOMENTS   
  • Winterburn came out strong, scoring 10 points in the opening quarter, including a pair of three-pointers, to keep the Penmen close at 22-18 after one.
  • Felician used a balanced attack to extend its lead to 42-31 at halftime, shooting 44 percent from the field and 6-for-13 from long range in the first half.
  • The Golden Falcons opened the third quarter on a 13-2 run to build their largest lead of 19 (65-46) late in the frame.
  • SNHU tried to rally behind Winterburn and senior Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.), who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, but could not close the gap in the final minutes.
NOTES
  • Winterburn finished with a career-best 19 points on 6-for-16 shooting, including 4-for-11 from three-point range, and added four rebounds, two assists and a block.
  • Gordon scored 15 points (6-for-11 FG) and grabbed a team-best seven boards.
  • SNHU shot 37 percent from the field and 74 percent from the foul line, while Felician connected on 43 percent overall and hit 10 of 20 from beyond the arc.
  • The Golden Falcons held a 46-39 rebounding advantage and outscored the Penmen 32-22 in the paint.
  • Felician's Stephanie Formby led all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
  • The Penmen split the games against CACC foes after a season-opening win over Post at Saint Anselm on Friday.
  • This was only the second time that Felician has defeated SNHU in 13 tries.  The Penmen had won 10 straight dating back to 2000 against the Golden Falcons.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will be home for the first time next Wednesday, November 19 (5:30 p.m.) to open the Northeast 10 season against Bentley University.
