Freshman Felipe di Paola (Mar del Plata, Argentina) put together the first two-goal performance of his career to lead the sixth-ranked and second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory against second-seeded American International College in the NE10 Championship quarterfinals Saturday at Ouellette Stadium.
KEY MOMENT
- SNHU set the tone early in the 13th minute when graduate student Martin Fuentes (Pamplona, Spain) dropped a quick pass to junior Martin Zapata (Pamplona, Spain), who dribbled to the right side of the box before second a cross back across toward the far left post. An AIC defender leaped to attempt and stop the ball from getting through to senior Philipp Herrmann (Bruckmuehl, Germany), who was waiting at the back post, but the ball caromed back across the goalmouth and inside the right post for the match's first goal.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked sixth in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25, has now won 10 of its last 11, including seven-in-a-row.
- SNHU improves to 29-10-7 (.707) all-time in 25 appearances in the NE10 Championship, including 2-0-0 against American Int'l. After capturing the NE10 title last season, the Penmen are now unbeaten in six straight NE10 postseason matches (5-0-1).
- The Penmen outshot the Yellow Jackets, 17-7, including 11-3 in shots on target.
- Graduate student Alvaro Garcia (Castelldefels, Spain) made two saves. AIC's lone goal came on a penalty kick in the 77th minute.
- Southern New Hampshire leads the all-time series with AIC, 26-2-0, and extends its unbeaten streak against the Yellow Jackets to 20 (19-0-1) dating back to the 2007 campaign. SNHU is outscoring AIC, 44-11, during the 20-match unbeaten streak. The Penmen have won seven straight in the series. The Penmen are also 15-1-0 at home and have won 12-in-a-row there. The last AIC win in the series came Sept. 30, 2006 (2-0) at home, while its last victory at SNHU came Oct. 1, 2005 (2-1).
- di Paola's two goals now give him six for his rookie campaign. He has three over the last two contests.
- Zapata's goal was his first of the year and 10th of his two-year Penmen career.
- Herrmann capped the scoring off a beautiful play and assist from junior Charlie Preus (London, U.K.). Herrmann matches his career high with his 10th goal of the season. He now has 28 for his career. Herrmann snaps a tie with Fuentes and now leads the league, outright, in goals, while his 20 points tie him for second.
- Fuentes finished the contest with a pair of assists. He now leads the league in points (25) and assists (7), while sitting second in goals (9).
- SNHU is 159-40-29 (.761) over its last 228 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.
- The Penmen improve to 107-15-18 (.829) over their last 140 contests at home, including 45-8-11 (.789) at Ouellette Stadium. SNHU is now 16-1-3 (.875) at home over its last two seasons and is unbeaten at Ouellette in 15 straight (12-0-3).
