Softball Takes #17 Pace To Nine Innings Before Falling 3-2

SNHU Earns #3 Seed for NE10 Championship, will play Assumption Tuesday

Game 1:  Pace University 3, Southern New Hampshire University 2 (9 innings)
Game 2:  Pace University 7, Southern New Hampshire University 0
Records: SNHU 25-15 (12-8 NE10), Pace 37-9 (20-0 NE10)

Southern New Hampshire University softball took #17 Pace University to extra innings, but fell 3-2 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.  The Setters finished a perfect 20-0 in league play with a 7-0 no-hitter in the second game.  SNHU will be the #3 seed in the Northeast-10 Championship that starts on Tuesday.
 
TOP PERFORMERS
GAME 1:  Pace 3, SNHU 2 (9 innings)
  • The Penmen managed seven hits against Pace senior Gisselle Garcia - the most by an NE10 opponent this season.  They also walked 11 times.
  • Still the Penmen could not get past the Setters to earn the win, stranding 18 runners on base.
  • Pace took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Jade Alverado drew a bases-loaded walk.
  • A double, a bunt, and a single by Brianna Shea gave the Setters a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
  • SNHU scored in the fourth.  Freshman Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) walked, Resetar singled, and then walks to Feldman and sophomore Kaysie DeMoura (Taunton, Mass.) plated a run.
  • In the top of the sixth, Feldman Walked, senior Mackenzie Bruggeman (Trumbull, Conn.) singled, DeMoura walked, and Donovan hit a sacrifice fly.
  • The Penmen loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Bruggeman flied out to end the inning..
  • A single by Donovan in the eighth gave the Penmen another chance to move ahead.
  • Resetar had a two-out double in the ninth, but Feldman flied out to end the inning.
  • Pace would win the game in the bottom of the ninth with a single and an error.
  • Freitas was tremendous in her eight innings for SNHU.  Donovan was tagged with the loss.  
  • Alyssa Smart worked the final two innings for Pace without allowing a run.
GAME 2:  Pace 7, SNHU 0 
  • Smart was story of the second game for Pace, pitching the Setters to a perfect 20-0 NE10 record with a seven-inning no-hitter.  She walked two, striking out four.
  • Pace scratched a pair of runs early, one scoring on a sacrifice fly in the first and the other on a ground out in the third.
  • The Setters then scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Kaylee Matsuda tripled to drive in two runs in the fifth against SNHU sophomore starter Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.).
  • Matsuda had an RBI single off freshman reliever Kayla O'Boyle (Commack, N.Y.), making just her second appearance in the circle for the Penmen.
NOTES
  • The Penmen have a 23-21 advantage in the all-time series with Pace.
  • Five players on SNHU are hitting .300 or above, led by Resetar (.375).  Bruggeman (.353), Lineman (.331), Feldman (.308), and Donovan (.300) follow.  All five started all 40 games for the Penmen.   Lineman's five homers and 36 RBIs are tops on the team.
  • Freitas has a 2.95 ERA with 118 strikeouts in 128.1 innings pitched.  She leads the team with 14 complete games and four shutouts.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen earned the #3 seed and will host #6 Assumption University on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.   Under the new format adoped for this season, as the higher seed, the Penmen need one win to advance. If Assumption wins the first game on Tuesday, the teams will meet for a second game to determine the team that advances to the Championship semifinals.
  • #1 seed Pace, #2 seed Saint Anselm, and #4 seed Bentley will also host games on Tuesday.  The highest seed to win on Tuesday will host the double elimination Championship starting on Thursday, May 1.
