No. 8 SNHU Field Hockey Shows Fight in Clash with No. 2 Saint Anselm

Crocombe, van de Poll find the back of the cage in Granite State showdown

The eighth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 2 Saint Anselm College on Sunday afternoon at Grappone Stadium. With the loss, the Penmen slip to 0-2 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 1-1.

KEY MOMENT
  • Junior midfielder Amelia Crocombe (Somerset, England) converted off her steal in front of the Hawk cage and scored - a key first-half goal to bring the Penmen level with the nation's No. 2 team. Her tally at 25:32 marked her first of the season and tied the game at 2-2. 
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire is ranked 8th in the NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) pre-season poll. 
  • Southern New Hampshire opened the season with contests against #1 Kutztown, and the second-ranked and defending national champion Hawks.
  • Saint Anselm had dropped its season-opener against #3 East Stroudsburg 2-1 on Saturday at Grappone Stadium.
  • Junior Minke van de Poll (Oosterbeck, Netherlands) tied the game for the Penmen at 12:34.
  • The Penmen received strong efforts in net from freshmen goalies Agustina Miranda Waigand (Miami, Fla.) and Margaux de Bievre, (Amsterdam, Netherlands), who combined for 14 saves.
  • Waigand stopped seven shots across the first and third quarters, while de Bievre made seven saves in the second and fourth.
  • This was a non-conference contest between the rivals, but does count for Queen City Cup scoring.  The Northeast 10 match-up is scheduled to be SNHU's regular season home finale on Tues. Oct. 28 (7:00 p.m.).
UP NEXT
  • The Penmen will play at Southern Connecticut State University on Wed. Sept. 10 at 6:00 p.m.
  • SNHU's home opener at Larkin Field will be next Saturday, Sept. 13 at 12:00 p.m. in a first-ever meeting with Lincoln Memorial University.
