Sophomore Samantha Pfeil (Methuen, Mass.) recorded a career-high 16 points to send the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 67-54 triumph over Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
KEY MOMENTS
- SNHU, which never trailed in the game, scored the first five points of the contest and the final five points of the opening quarter to establish a 20-11 lead.
- The Penmen then kicked off the second stanza with a 12-2 rush – led by six from senior Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) – to seize a 32-13 advantage with 5:58 to go before halftime. The Panthers whittled their halftime deficit to 39-27.
- Adelphi kept that momentum going with a 9-0 blitz to begin the second half and make it a one-possession game, but SNHU answered by ending the third on a 16-4 run to re-establish a 55-40 lead. Pfeil led the way during the stretch with seven points, while sophomore Kameron St. Pierre (Swansea, Mass.) added four. The Panthers would not get closer than 12 the rest of the way.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire has won six of its last eight, including two straight.
- Pfeil was an incredibly efficient 6-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-3 from long distance, and a perfect 2-for-2 from the line. She grabbed a pair of rebounds and dished two assists.
- Gordon posted 13 points (6-12 FG, 1-2 FT), six rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocks.
- Junior Ava Winterburn (New Boston, N.H.) was also in double figures with 11 points (3-5 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 3-4 FT), three boards and three assists.
- St. Pierre registered six points (1-5 FG, 4-4 FT) and seven rebounds.
- Graduate student Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) corralled a team-high nine rebounds and dished a pair of assists, while netting six points (2-4 FG, 2-2 FT).
- After not reaching double figures in the first eight games of the season, Pfeil is averaging 11.5 ppg over her last six, while scoring 10-plus points five times.
- Adelphi still leads the all-time series with SNHU, 11-10, but sees its two-game winning streak snapped. The teams have split the last 12 meetings, though the Penmen have won five of the last seven. SNHU has also captured three of the last four in Garden City.
