The Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team earned its first Northeast 10 victory of the season with a 72-66 win over American International College on Sunday afternoon at the Stan Spirou Field House. Senior
Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) led the way with 18 points and 14 rebounds, adding three blocks for the Penmen.
KEY MOMENTS
- Southern New Hampshire came out strong, shooting 62.5 percent in the opening quarter to build a 26-12 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Penmen maintained control into halftime, taking a 40-28 advantage into the locker room and never trailing in the contest.
- American International closed the gap in the third quarter, trimming the margin to single digits, but SNHU responded with timely baskets and defensive stops. The Penmen shot 60.0 percent in the fourth quarter, connecting on five of six free throws, to hold off the Yellow Jackets.
NOTES
- Junior Ava Winterburn (New Boston, N.H.) chipped in with 13 points, connecting on three three-pointers and adding seven rebounds and three assists.
- Sophomore Samantha Pfeil (Methuen, Mass.) finished with 12 points, matching her career-best. She also pulled down three rebounds.
- Junior Madison Hughes (Columbia, Conn.) tallied nine points, pulled down six rebounds, and added three assists.
- Graduate student Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) chipped in six points, six rebounds and four assists.
- Sophomore Taylor Brennan (Southbury, Conn.) also scored six points, pulling down five rebounds and accumulating four assists.
- Gordon's double-double was her first of the season and 16th of her career.
- SNHU shot 46.6 percent from the field on the afternoon with AIC at 30.7 percent. Chelsea Reeves of the Yellow Jackets led all scorers with 30 points.
- The four-game win streak is the longest for SNHU since winning seven straight 1/24-2/14/23.
- The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series 27-21, although the Penmen have won 10 of the last 12 meetings.
