Levi Lawal (Laurel, Md.) added a season-high 12, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team watched Saint Michael's College pull away late for a 79-64 victory Wednesday night at the Stan Spirou Field House.
KEY MOMENTS
- Southern New Hampshire jumped out to 15-4 lead in the first five minutes behind six, five and four points, respectively, from redshirt-junior Jahshawne Joseph (Malvern, Ont.), Wallace and senior Ugo Nwachukwu (Imo State, Nigeria), but Saint Michael's responded with 10 straight over the ensuing three-plus minutes to make it a one-point game. SNHU would carry a 30-27 advantage to the break.
- SMC used a 17-5 run early in the second half to grab a 47-40 lead less than seven minutes in, but the big blow came less than two minutes later. Clinging to a 47-45 lead with 11:38 remaining, the Purple Knights ripped off 30 of the next 33 points to open a commanding 77-48 lead with 6:01 to go.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire had won three of its last four, but has now lost four of its last seven.
- Wallace was 8-for-16 from the field, 2-for-5 from 3 and 1-for-2 at the line. He dished four assists and pulled in a pair of rebounds.
- Lawal notched his second double-digit scoring game as a Penmen on 3 of 7 shooting from the floor, including 2 of 4 from behind the arc, and 4 of 6 shooting from the stripe. He posted six rebounds and three assists.
- Joseph added seven points (2-3 FG, 2-3 3-FG, 1-2 FT), seven boards and two steals.
- Freshman Jamier Rose (Berwick, Maine) netted a career-high eight points (3-4 FG, 2-3 3-FG) and collected a pair of rebounds in six minutes off the bench.
- SNHU still leads the all-time series with Saint Michael's, 46-17, and has won 21 of the last 27 meetings, including 10 of 13, though SMC has now captured two-in-a-row. The Penmen have also won 11 of 13 at home versus the Purple Knights, who have taken two of the last three at the Field House.
- Wallace has scored in double figures in all 12 contests this season and continues to lead the NE10 in scoring (21.2 ppg).
- SNHU dips to 64-24 (.727) at home over the last seven seasons and falls to 4-2 this year.
