Southern New Hampshire University softball opened its Florida trip with a dramatic 5-4, walk-off victory over St. Cloud State before falling 2-0 to the University of Findlay on Sunday at Chain O'Lakes Park in Titusville, Fla.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Penmen rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a thrilling 5-4 walk-off win in their season opener.
- After St. Cloud State scored four runs in the top half of the eighth on a grand slam by Sydney Roe, senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) sparked the comeback with an RBI single to center field to get SNHU on the board.
- Junior Kaysie DeMoura (Taunton, Mass.) then reached on a fielding error that allowed two runs to score and cut the deficit to 4-3.
- Following a sacrifice bunt by junior Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine) and an intentional walk to senior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.), sophomore Julia Parise (East Meadow, N.Y.) delivered the decisive blow with a two-run single to right field, plating the tying and winning runs.
- Senior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) turned in a strong start in the circle, striking out six over 7.2 innings of work. Sophomore Kayla O'Boyle (Commack, N.Y.) recorded the final out to earn the victory in relief.
- Junior Payton Bryson (Franklin, N.H.) added a hit and stole two bases, while Feldman, DeMoura, Parise, junior Mikaya Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Lineman each recorded hits in the win.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Penmen were limited to three hits in a 2-0 setback to Findlay in the afternoon contest.
- Junior Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine) was strong in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing six hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.
- Findlay scored once in the first inning on an RBI single and added an insurance run on a solo home run in the fifth.
- Bryson, Alto and Donovan accounted for SNHU's three hits, while sophomore Livi Sousa (Hudson, Mass.) drew a walk in the contest.
NOTES
- Sunday marked the start of the Penmen's spring break trip to Florida, where they will play through Saturday, March 7.
- Parise, who had only four at bats in her first season with SNHU, drove in the first two runs of her career on her first career hit.
- This was the second consecutive season SNHU and St. Cloud State have met in Florida, with the Huskies prevailing 10-4 last year.
- It was the first meeting with the University of Findlay. The Oilers (Findlay, Ohio) had defeated St. Cloud State 2-0 earlier on Sunday.
