Penmen suffer first setback despite four-point effort from Gallo

The 17th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the 2026 season on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Assumption, 11-6, in the Northeast 10 Conference opener. Assumption used a decisive fourth quarter to pull away, outscoring the Penmen 4-1 over the final 15 minutes. Despite a four-point effort from junior Joey Gallo (Derry, N.H.), SNHU was unable to overcome a 15-4 deficit in faceoffs and a 39-23 gap in ground balls.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Gallo opened the scoring at 5:33 of the first quarter off an assist from junior Sean Dwyer (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), giving SNHU an early 1-0 lead.
  • Assumption responded with a strong second quarter, scoring four times to take a 4-2 lead into halftime despite a man-up goal from sophomore Lasse Volquardsen (Frankfurt, Germany).
  • The Penmen battled back in the third quarter, as Gallo and Dwyer each scored to even the game at 4-4 midway through the frame.
  • The Greyhounds answered with a three-goal burst in just over a minute to regain control, pushing the advantage to 7-4 before Gallo trimmed the deficit to 7-5 late in the third.
  • Assumption seized command in the fourth quarter, with Nolan Johnson scoring three times in the period as part of a four-goal closing run that put the game out of reach.
NOTES
  • Gallo led the Penmen with three goals and one assist, while Dwyer added a goal and two assists. Volquardsen and junior Kyle Beckett (Monroe, Conn.) each scored once.
  • Junior goalkeeper Matt Roy (North Andover, Mass.) made 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.
  • Assumption held advantages in shots (45-34), ground balls (39-23) and faceoffs (15-4), controlling possession throughout the contest.
  • The loss marked SNHU's first of the season after opening the year with four consecutive victories.
  • The Penmen lead the all-time series 26-15, although the Greyhounds have won the last three.
