Behind a seven-goal second quarter and a five-point effort from senior
Aiden Blouin (Barre, Vt.), No. 15/19 Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse earned a 15-8 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Monday afternoon at Ouellette Stadium. The win moves the Penmen to 3-0 for the first time in program history and avenges last season's 11-9 loss to the Spartans.
KEY MOMENTS
- Trailing 2-1 at 14:01 of the second quarter, SNHU evened the score on a goal from junior Joey Gallo (Derry, N.H.) to spark the decisive run. Blouin then added a goal of the first of three assists by sophomore PJ Cunningham (Bronx, N.Y.)
- Back-to-back man-up goals from junior Sean Dwyer (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) at 10:10 and Blouin at 9:44 turned a one-goal game into a 5-2 cushion and shifted momentum firmly to the Penmen.
- Goals six seconds apart from sophomore Lasse Volquardsen (Frankfurt, Germany) at 6:00 and junior Tucker Townsend (Pembroke, N.H.) at 5:54 stretched the advantage to 8-2 at halftime.
- Blouin's third goal of the afternoon at 11:50 of the fourth quarter pushed the margin to 13-3 as SNHU put the game out of reach.
NOTES
- The 3-0 start marks the best opening in program history.
- SNHU is ranked No. 15 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine poll and No. 19 in the USILA Coaches Poll.
- Blouin finished with three goals and two assists to lead the offense, while Gallo added three goals.
- Volquardsen totaled two goals and an assist, and junior Matt Feole (Methuen, Mass.) scored twice, his first two SNHU goals.
- Dwyer recorded one goal and two assists, and Cunningham dished out three assists.
- Junior goalkeeper Matt Roy (North Andover, Mass.) made 11 saves over 50 minutes to earn the win.
- The Penmen outshot STAC 38-33 and held a 33-27 edge in ground balls.
- SNHU converted three of six extra-man opportunities.
- Townsend went 10-for-12 at the faceoff X as the Penmen edged the Spartans, 13-12, in faceoff wins.
- With the victory, SNHU evened the all-time series with STAC at 1-1.
