Southern New Hampshire University softball swept a Northeast 10-opening doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State on Friday afternoon, highlighted by a dominant two-hit shutout from junior Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine) in the nightcap.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Penmen used a balanced offensive attack to earn an 8-4 victory in the opener, scoring in four different innings.
- Freshman Payton Bryson (Franklin, N.H.) set the tone at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior Mikaya Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) drove in three runs on a pair of hits, including a key two-run single in the fifth inning that helped SNHU pull away.
- SNHU jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings before Southern Connecticut State answered with three runs in the fourth to cut into the deficit. The Penmen responded immediately with a three-run fifth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth.
- Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) went the distance in the circle to earn the win, allowing four runs on 11 hits while striking out six to improve to 4-2 on the season.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Donovan was in complete control in the second game, tossing a two-hit shutout as the Penmen secured the sweep with a 5-0 victory.
- The junior right-hander allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings, facing only 27 batters. Her record improves to 4-3.
- SNHU broke through in the fourth inning when Alto doubled home a run before senior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) followed with a two-run homer to make it 3-0.
- The Penmen added two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-run single from sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) to account for the final margin.
- Alto led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Lineman and Abbott each drove in two runs.
NOTES
- Alto led the offense on Friday with four hits in seven at bats with four RBIs.
- Senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) had three hits, an RBI, and three runs scored.
