Southern New Hampshire University softball split a Thursday doubleheader at the Space Coast Complex, defeating Walsh University, 7-0, before falling 4-2 to Gannon University in the nightcap.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine) starred in the opener, tossing a complete-game shutout while also leading the offense in a 7-0 victory over Walsh.
- Donovan scattered four hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out four to secure the win in the circle.
- At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Her two-run single in the fourth inning stretched the lead to 6-0, and she later stole second and came around to score to cap the three-run frame.
- Freshman Payton Bryson (Franklin, N.H.) scored twice and drove in a run, while sophomore Julia Parise (East Meadow, N.Y.) added an RBI single in a three-run second inning. Junior Kaysie DeMoura (Taunton, Mass.) reached base twice and scored, and senior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) also crossed the plate.
- The Penmen scored in the first inning and built the lead with three runs in both the second and fourth to put the game out of reach.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- In the second game, the Penmen trimmed a 4-0 deficit to 4-2 but could not complete the comeback in a 4-2 loss to Gannon, the Golden Knights.
- Gannon scored twice in the third inning and added two more in the fourth on a two-run home run to build the four-run cushion.
- SNHU answered in the fifth. Senior Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) drove in a run with a groundout, and Bryson followed with an RBI fielder's choice to cut the lead in half.
- The Penmen threatened again in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but were unable to push a run across. SNHU was retired in order in the seventh.
- Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) turned in another strong outing in the circle, allowing four runs on five hits over six innings with seven strikeouts. The complete game was her second of the Florida trip.
- DeMoura and Donovan each collected two hits in the loss, while junior Mikaya Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) added a hit and scored a run.
NOTES
- Donovan's shutout was the first of her career, as she earned her second consecutive win in the circle.
- Thursday marked the first meeting between SNHU and Walsh, and the Penmen are now 1-1 all-time against Gannon.
- Donovan (.500) and DeMoura (.400) lead the Penmen through eight games.
- All 11 hits for the Penmen on Thursday were singles.
